Had a stack of old milk cartons in the shed, thought I would do some cutting using my VA Warder, I have had this sword for about 3 years it has always been a favourite of mine but up until today it has sat in my display case and never been used. I was cutting alone at the side of my house, it is a small area but great for cutting as it is fenced off from view as well as unexpected access ( all pets locked away and girlfriend told what I was doing.) This happened after about 20 cartons in, ( I use these milk cartons as I normally get multiple cuts out of each one and they are quite soft so no damage to any other sword so far ) Here is a photo of what is left of my VA Warder Not to be put off, I went for an old favourite to finish off, a VA Kriegschwert, No injury to myself or anything else, just thought I would share this unexpected event. Couple of closer shots of the break. The dark patch on the edge of the blade is where I oiled the broken blade as I want to mount it shards of Narsil style.

Mate that's not cool, I had a Mundial Kitchen that broke and it looked just like that on the inside. I had it replaced and was told that it was a tempering issue.
At lease you didn't get hurt when it broke.

Yeah - heat treat. Glad no injuries and glad you did not go ape semprini like John Clements did when he broke his Del Tin. :-)

Will send an Email to VA linking to this thread, so they can be aware of this, these were very soft targets and up to the break this sword was cutting great. Sabres are my favourite type of blade so this is a good reason to purchase that Verimus I have been after for awhile, might even pick up another Warder sometime as it really was a good sword. My reaction was a bit milder than that Bill, I just went inside and got another sword .

When I worked for Pontiac, back in the late 1980's, we had a Firebird Trans Am that a guy bought new, and after like a month he began having weird electrical problems. Stuff like the speedo stopped working, then a few days later would start working again, but it happened to most all the electrical stuff in the car. We worked on it like 30 times, never able to fix it. Eventually Pontiac bought the car back from the guy and shipped it to Detroit to take it apart so they would know why it did what it did. What I mean by the novella above is that weird imperfections can happen to anything that's manufactured.
What's VA's warranty policy like? Did it startle you when it snapped? It would have tripped me out! I don't want to presume on their skill, but I imagine if you got some close up shots of the break some of the guys here could tell you if there was a flaw in the steel that might have caused the break.

When the blade broke it just fell in the pile of cut bottles, I wasn't startled, just thought well I never thought that would happen.
Sonny from VA has very kindly offered me a replacement, not too worried about that as this thread was more for me about sword safety than seeking a replacement blade, but it is a very generous offer and nice to know he stands by his product.

I guess Sonny will want the pieces back but a regrind on what's left would make a "Daisho" pair!

Aussie, Sonny never mentioned the return of the pieces so I'll probably just bin them. If they broke once, they might do so again and I wouldn't want that, as next time someone might not be so lucky.

It's kinda hard to see in the pics but I think I see enlarged grain. They probably got the blade too hot before quenching or held it too long at critical.

Hi Marc, thanks for sharing that, now that explains your signature line, and shows how our journey through sword collecting reflects the changes in us as people. I too moved from katana to another style of sword, lucky none of mine broke, just felt like something finished and it was time. Did you end up studying a particular western sword style like you mentioned?
Deepbluedave, not to derail the thread, good to hear that VA agreed to replace it, reflects integrity in the business, a trustworthy vendor indeed.

I agree. This story gets a happy ending all around---no injury, and a replacement sword. Congrats Deepbluedave.
