zentesukenVIICompanies are often very vague about who the forge is who makes their swords. In a way I can understand that but I don't see a reason to be rude about it... randomnobodyNot considering the quality of the tsukamaki and overall mounting I think the geometry is way off... In a sense this looks more like a former naginata (naoshi) badly reshaped to nagimaki. If you look carefully the flow of the shinogi isn't correct as a wider curvature should flow into a large kissaki. Also the hamachi is sitting on top of the habaki which is a big no-go for me. Anyway, the habaki definitely kills it for me though... Still it's amazing what they nowadays can make for the price. I wasn't even aware that other forges have started these blades too...

I was on my phone when I looked it up, so had to take the closeups an inch or so at a time, sacrificing a lot of the "flow" aspect. I also completely disregarded all things furniture because that would be thrown away at the first opportunity, anyway. But something did seem very "off" about the geometry; I just couldn't put it all together while looking at a few inches at a time on a 4"-wide screen. Either way, where there is an initial model, there will be future (hopefully improved) generations.

Hiyas, Stickem. Fine review, and if it weren't for that small matter of $1000, I'd snag one of these in a heartbeat. That blade seems to exemplify some of the traits of both khukuri and katana, and that turns me on like crazy! When I get some time, I'll have to read thru 5 pages of replies. Then I'll have to PM ya for some design details. I wonder if I could get that in a 2 shaku nagasa with a 9 sun tsuka? Take care, man. I'll add 2 points to yer karma stash, since I really dig a comprehensive review and a good thread.

Thanks for the compliments Originally I asked if this piece could be made for me with a 2.0 (60cm) nagasa and 9-10" tsuka. This is the borderline between a katana and a wakizashi, as far as classification goes. Apparently the only length the Kaneie forge is making for a naginata-naoshi is the one you see, which is 1.2 shaku (40cm). I do think this current 40cm version reviewed might benefit from shortening the tsuka an inch or so, as it is closer to a tanto-sized wakizashi than it is to a katana size. Kaneie make unokubi-zukuri katana as short as 2.3 shaku; however, keep in mind the unokubi-zukuri sugata is different in these katana (e.g., less pronounced curvature, has a yokote, is tamahagane, and so on...) so they look less like a naginata than the version reviewed.

These really are great-looking blades and work well. These blades are 10 inches long and very sharp.
