Hey guys! This being my first post I just wanna say love the site, and hope to make a bunch of new friends on this site. Looking to expand my sword collection, I am beginning to turn to other places for insperation. One of the most unique swords that I have seen is mugen's sword from Samurai Champloo. It is truly like no sword in existance, so i was thinking about taking on my first custom job, and trying to make a true enough copy of one of my favorite swords. For those of you not familiar with the show the sword looks like this: I'm not experienced in sword customization at all, and this would be a doozy of a project, but the question i ask of you is: Is this possible? the saya and tsuba (if you can call it that) look like the most dificult task. Here is another pic of it scetched out: :EDIT: BTW if anyone can read this feel free to chime in I realize the hidden tanto is also pretty far out there, but even those of you who aren't fans of Champloo, or anime in general you still have to admit this is a unique and very cool blade. Champloo means a blending of cultures, or something to that effect, and this sword definately has hints of several different types of swords in it's design. whelp, hope to be chatting with all of you in the future. -Koos

hey, sure its possible, ANYTHING is possible. I'd suggest looking up the guide in sword-making. That is a great help for anyone who wants to go aboutmaking their own swords, and would be a good place to start for you.
Good luck with this, it looks very unique!

It looks like a European saber blade mounted into a Chinese crossguard and handle with perhaps a middle eastern or Indian (from India) pommel. The scabbard looks similar to the WWII Japanese gunto (<sp?) ones.

Mugens sword was based off of an old tachi design called kogarasu maru (little crow). About the last 2/3 of the blade is double edged, here's a pic. I hope you document you project completely

Bugei do a recreation in full tachi mounts of the Little Crow, Dynasty Forge do one like the pic Gamestation posted in katana fittings. I have a similar sword with Brian at Ronin Swords atm getting a makeover, difference is, mine has a straight blade. Thats what I love about Japanese swords, once you start looking around there are so many different styles, So the blade is out there, all you need to do is save a big bag of money to get all the rest done, unless you have a good workshop

It did remind me of the "double-edged" kat blade, but it looked more saber-ish to me in the drawing. Also, are those two circles on the grip (one near the guard, one on the pommel [or, kashira, perhaps?] supposed to be mekugi?

I like the idea of a double edged Katana. The false edge gives you so many more options.

Yeah it's double edged with a two handed grip... and he uses the sai like tsuba a few times in the show to block strikes (not very realistic sword fights, but hey it's an anime, and it adds to the cool points) It's really a cool show, he travels with a samurai who is very traditional in his mannerisms and fighting style, and the two personalities clash, it's good stuff. and i def think it's menuki single pegged. and think it's a japanese style blade. this is more of a long term project, probably summer time when i start back to work and get some moola, but i'm trying to get some ideas now. glad ya'll think it's a cool sword.

I think it's a Ken. Straight, double edged, full length of the sword (like Blade's).
(Mugen doesn't do things the traditional way)
Great show.

That is a unique looking sword indeed. Wonder what Musashi would say if I showed them this sword

They'd probably say something weird in Chinese, as they are chinese and then hang up the phone..... I don't think they'd agree to manufacture it, but hey, if they do, they have my word - i'm buying it!

Hell, it dont look too bad. Purely Fantasy, but for 60 bucks, might be worth a shot.

And if someone would like to make it into something functional i'd say take these fittings and get a kogarasu maru blade ( well it's a little bit different from the sword we're looking for but at least fully functional ).

The sword in a way matches the character - he doesn't fight like a "traditional" samurai, and had a very aggressive and agile way of fighting. It only make sense that his sword is a bit "odd" as well.
