Hi, I'm having a hard time finding any half decent Yang (Taiji) daos. I was about to buy a Hanwei Yang Saber at Cult of Athena, but I see that they are no longer carrying them anymore. In fact, I believe Hanwei is discontinuing that model. It wasn't the best sword, but it was better than what I've been able to find. What little I've been able to find are mostly wushu swords. Does anybody know of a good Taiji dao?

You might have to ask someone like Sinoswords.com to make you one. I don't know of any Production daos other than the Hanwei. THough to be honest I've never really looked for one myself

Thanks Stickem, but I'm looking for a specific kind of dao, one used specifically for Taiji, mostly coming out Yang and Wu styles. The ones at Dynasty and Seven Stars Trading are willow and Ox tail blades, the one at HSTS is closer to what I'm looking for, except the one I'm looking for is longer with an "S" shaped guard and a ring pommel.

No joy at Edgefair.com or cashanwei.com. Drat, the Yang saber might have gone the way of all flesh.

You're welcome. Sorry the links weren't more helpful. I have done some Taiji with a Jian/straight sword, but not with a dao/saber, so my familiarity with exactly what you are looking for is not solid. Here is one with an S-guard and a ring pommel with blades up to 32": www.wle.com/product4553.html

That's actually one of the swords that I'm considering Stickem, mostly around the $140 range. except they all seem to be sword like objects, rather than actual swords. Even the Hanwei Yang saber was kind of an in between blade, not really designed to do any cutting even though it does come sharp (a student of mine has one, so I have handled one), but it was the closest to what I was looking for. I have been sort of interested in a dao sold by Enlightenment Swords, www.enlightenmentswords.com/product/dao_tian_wei_bo.htmlIt seems to have the length, blade shape, and ring pommel I want, the only thing really missing is the "S" shaped guard. I haven't contacted them yet, so I don't know how much it costs as well as the actual length and weight. I've communicated with them in the past, and the the guy I corresponded with seemed nice enough, but they are based way over in New Zealand, and I haven't been able to get much feedback about their products or service. I'm also a bit hesitant after reading some of their product descriptions in which they refer to fullers as "blood groves", and even go on to perpetuate the myth that they were used to break the suction on the blade in a wound. Their descriptions do go on to state the weight saving and structural aspects of fullers, but the reference still bothers me a bit. Another consideration is the fact that I'm already spending a chunk of change on a jian that I'm currently having made at Arms & Armor. The swords at Enlightenment aren't hugely expensive, but they aren't cheap either. They run in the $400 to $500+ range, and I'm not sure of how much I want to spend at this point. I liked the Hanwei's $199 price point.

You can shoot a line to Garrett at Jin-Shi.com
He has dealt with a lot of custom Daos in the past. I'm not sure what he has cooking right now, but it may be worthwhile to contact him with your wants.

Thanks for everybody's help, but I managed to find somebody on the board that was willing to sell me his. I'm really glad, because most of what I was finding was places that simply hadn't updated their listing, to show that they no longer had that item in stock.
As far as Garrett over Jin-Shi, I actually contacted him earlier this year about the possibility of doing a custom job for me (for a jian, not a dao). He informed me that Jin-Shi was no longer taking custom orders, because they want to concentrate on their production lines. Too bad, I would really like to find a really good Taiji Dao, but I am looking forward to the possibility of Jin-Shi putting out their Qing jian sometime this year.
