Hey all, i'm new here, so greetings! I have recently decided to start collecting swords. My major area of interest, is, of course, the Vikings. I started out with the Sticklestad sword from Windlass. I'm happy with it. It didn't exceed my expectations in any way, but it's not too bad. I also have the Dark Ages Seax, and was very pleased with that. But i'm looking to go up in a sword, while not destroying my budget (100-650$). Unfortunately, the Albion swords seem just out of my reach, as amazing as it would be to own some of those (Berserker sword anyone? ). But I saw the Trondheim sword from Hanwei. It's just at my budget limit, and it looks very nice. So I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the blade, and can offer something of a review on it? Also, I spotted a sword on eBay. It's a Del Tin. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a scabbard (I don't get why some manufacturers don't send scabbards with their swords...seems like it'd be mandatory to me. Just a noob to sword collecting, so reasons for this are beyond me.). This -is- second hand, mind you, but it looks in good shape. I haven't put a bid on it yet, because I wanted a second opinion, and didn't want to buy a lemon, or something that was obviously not worth it. Here's the link: cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-Viking-Sword_W0QQitemZ180224378057QQihZ008QQcategoryZ43339QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemI'd appreciate any advice and tips you guys can give me. Thanks, Vidarr

Hi vidarr, I like the simplistic look of many of the Armour Class viking swords and I have heard on SFI or myarmoury (I can't remember which) that they handle quite well... other than that there doesn't seem to be much said about them. www.armourclass.co.uk/Data/Pages/DarkAge_Main.htmTheir Gilling sword makes me go all warm and fuzzy!

Wanna Berserker? Here you go theres one SH for sale now - offer him $650. www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=12785Otherwise the G2 Witham seems to have won many friends, though a little heavy. I like the look of the Darksword Oslo - though I've never handled any of these. That one Vy posted is NICE.

*mouth waters* I can only hope he would be willing to drop his price that low... Ever since I saw that thing, i've been dreaming of having that. Ooooo...i'd get some etching on the blade, a custom scabbard...
Anyways, thank you for all your help so far guys, I really appreciate your kindness in offering some info and suggestions.
The Gen2 sword looks really nice, and somewhat similar to a Cold Steel blade I saw at Kult of Athena. I'm so tied, because I don't want to spend so much, but I also don't want to buy a piece of junk. Not to mention that there really are quite a few choices out there.

Where are you vidarr? I could make you a single edged blade like that. You could fit it out with a bought cross and pommel like the Oslo from DSA - I bought a set of these recently. We could make it under $600 no worries.

Greetings vidarr! I was looking at Valiant Armory's site and found that they have two viking sword, one of them called "viking sword" is pretty cool but somehow it does not feel that traditional to me. Then they have a viking sword called "The Norseman" which looks really great. You can check them out at: www.valiant-armoury.com/standard.htmlHere are pictures of the two, beginning with the "viking sword"

I have the original VA viking and it's a solid sword but a too bulky to handle well and not historical in any aspect really. I like the look of the Norseman but the weight is over four lbs, too heavy for my tastes.

I use this method to train ..... start with something about 2-3 times heavier than your favorite blade and train with that as you would you sword for about 2 months for 25-30 minutes a day (balance on your training tool is not important) than when you grab it will seem so light and responsive you'll think you where born with it on the end of your arm

The original weighed at around 4 lbs according to Hank. Our POB is at 5.5" below hilt. The original is at 17.4 cm or 6.8503937 inches. Look in "Swords of the Viking Age" by Ian Pierce and see for yourself. So ours does come in better. Boy, I could really hear it if I did come in with the original stats. "It is way too heavy!" No I think we did well. So did Hank.

Aye! The vikings were no semprini's(little cat) they were probably the biggest and one of the most body trained warriors in history. So a 4lbs sword were nothing, especially when high on red fly mushroom.

Thank you all for your help, if anyone has anything else to add, i'd be glad to hear it . I did see there was a 398$ sword from Albion titled just "The Viking". It's nice, and that style of Viking sword I like the most. The only thing i'd like to see different about it would be the grip. I think a grip like the one from the Beserkr sword would fit it perfectly, with the raised area in the middle (not sure what the term for that would be, forgive my noobishness.). But other than that, the pommel and gaurd are of my favorite viking sword style. @ Brenno: I'm in the Chicagoland area of Illinois in the U.S. The idea of a Berserkr-esque sword within my price range is quite intriguing...

I think Shooter Mike has that Viking from Albion for $398. Have a chat to him about it.
I could make that Berserkr Blade no worries. I don't know how easy it would be to send it to US, and it would cost about $100 for shipping alone.

For what it's worth I Think they did a good job on the Witham as well and, alot of other people who own this sword agree.
Honestly, yes this sword is a little heavier than some others I personaly like the extra weight ( I eat alot of red meat ;D ) and, it is well balanced something another sword might cut this one will cut in half.
A Viking that had a hard time with this swords weight would have probably also thought the long ship was a little hard to row, the beer was a little to strong etc. ;D

Vidarr, I have a Gen2 Witham and an Albion Gotland. The handling is almost identical, though the Witham is just over half a pound heavier. For a 3 lb sword, the Witham is amazingly quick and "wield-able". I have never handled any of the Albion Squire Line swords, but I hear they are very nice for the money.

I've been considering getting an albion of late, either a 15th century bastard from the squire line or the ringeck or the mercenary. All of them look like great little hand and a half weapons, that is for sure.

I have the gen2 witham, and I love it. I value it's traditional construction and (little) imperfections that let you know it wasn't stamped out by a machine in a batch of hundreds. It has held up very well to my "developing" cutting techniques, with nary a nick, scratch, or bend. Two thumbs up ;D
