You're welcome. They do some very nice scabbard work and I love kamagong anything
So far the only "complaint" I have about the ginunting Kombat Weapons sent is the finger grip. Not that it is poorly executed or anything, rather I am not used to this sort of grip and it takes a bit of adjustment to get comfortable with since it differs from the of the handle of the FMA sword from KC with which I usually train.
The design of my ginunting is by Sgt. Prado of the Phillipine Marines. He's a PTK guy, which is where much of the ginunting work you see comes from.
With most blades of Filipino origin, you'll be getting 5160, which hold up very well to chopping on hard targets. This spring steel is what mine is made of. 1095 is a better steel for getting a hamon and that sort of thing, but if you are planning on using the sword practically, I'd probably go with the 5160. That's what mine is anyway.
Last I talked with Cecil at Kris Cutlery, he wasn't planning on having any ginunting in stock any time soon, so if you are specifically looking at this style, you'll have to try elsewhere.
I know some people who like the TFW version, which you can see Ron cutting with here:
Ron Kosakowski has trained with many of the same instructors I have - Professor Presas, Guro Dan, Sifu Fong, and so on - so I know he comes from some good teaching, but haven't met or spoken with him personally.
He says Tuhon Gaje had some input on the design, so it might be a good buy, as Tuhon Gaje certainly knows his PTK. Thing is, I have no personal experience with it and therefore can't give you an objective opinion on it. Might be worth a look if you are looking for a US vendor rather than dealing with the Philippines directly.
Here is one of Tuhon Gaje:
And here is one of a fellow cutting up stuff with his ginunting from Kombat Weapons (Kahali Customs):
I may do a review of mine at some point, but I hate to do a review of without including some cutting. I haven't cut anything with mine yet, too cold. But I may try some bamboo with it when things get warmer here. Maybe do a formal review as well...
Please note that after I ordered the ginunting from Kombat Weapons, they
did reply consistently to email inquiries regarding its status. They did not leave me hanging, just couldn't guarantee me when it would be at my door. They also sent two small keychain/neck knives for free as a way of apologizing for the delay in shipping. So I do think you will get what you pay for if you order from them. Just don't expect it to happen quickly. If you are interested in getting a custom, then you probably expect it to take some time anyway, so this may not be as much of a concern as it would be if you were buying something off the shelf from a US vendor.
Let me know how it goes and what you decide to do, and lemme know if I can be of any further help on this...
