The qama is not medieval. Not even remotely.
Why not try the windlass shrewsbury? Those make great abusable sword if you're willing to take 5 minutes of your time to tighten the nut - that's all it takes to make it a fun weapon.

The Shrewsbury is no longer in production, and you can't get them any more.

![](http://www.strongblade.com/prod/prodimages/sba-dominuscrusader1_m.jpg) You might want to look into Strongblade.com they have a number of swords under 100 BUT not all of their blades are tempered so you need to decide if you want a cutter or a display piece...The one pictured is 104 and does have a tempered blade. As far as I know no one on this forum has purchased from them yet so its a gamble but in a earlier thread the owner said he would give a discount if you emailed him and let him know you were from this forum.

It'd be nice if they could fill the niche for a cheap functional medieval blade. Someone buy one of those and test it for us. ;D

They are going to temper the warspike soon, just not sure when. I'll let you know if I learn anything.

the qama is "post roman empire" kinda a throw back on a tried'n'true desing to quote atlanta cutlery"used by warriors from persia to the caucasus, the qama is a deadly cloce combat design that dates back to the roman short sword . considered to be the national weapon of russian georgia" end quote
p.s. tellyour dad a good sword only grows in value over time if well cared fore

Swordboy, I don't know if this is true or not, but I think they seem to be claiming that the qama is a relative, not that it's from the same time period.
That's a real shame. I think aov still has them though?

Does AoV still offer the shrewsbury? If so you should look into that sword. ArmsofValor.com. I thinks its around like 120$ but is a good sword for the money.

www.armsofvalour.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AOVL&Product_Code=500768&Category_Code=WSCSeems they do still have it, and at $130, not a bad deal at all. I'd like to get one, myself, but I'm holding all purchases until further notice. ![:(](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) As to the importance of temper, unless you like bending your sword back into shape and constantly reworking its edge, you'll want some level of temper before you cut anything. I don't know if an untempered sword would break, per se, but it sure would take a set easy, I think. I could have my information mixed, even backwards, so I'll let somebody else clarify.

Email them and ask, they seem to be pretty reasonable about answering questions....
