I thought I would share one of my prized swords with my SBG friends - This is a Rococo or Baroque style small-sword manufactured between 1700-1740 that I purchased from Sailor-in-Saddle last year. I will use the Sailor in Saddle description to sum it up because it is 'spot on' - The hilt of this early to mid-18th century small-sword is silver-washed hand-chased bronze. The quality of the decorative work is quite good, featuring classical figures, hunting motifs and florals. Every aspect of the hilt is decorated. An unusual and rare feature is the small eagle head finial on the pommel. The blade is rapier-like, stiff, rhomboid in cross-section, with a deep central fuller on either side. The balance on this lovely sword is outstanding. One of my favorite pieces that I believe to have Prussian origins based on the motif and style. Pretty cool sword...

Thats a really pretty sword, may I ask how long the blade is? I'm in the process of putting together a small sword trainer.

Hi Silver,
The blade is 30.75 inches long with a width of 0.50 inches at the ricasso with an even taper to the point.

That is all kinds of nice, right there.
In the past, I have always maintained that I prefer "elegantly plain" versions with little decoration. My recent purchase of a Hanwei Charlemagne saber has opened my eyes somewhat in that regard. That smallsword is beautifully elegant without sacrificing a whit of practicality.
