I doubt that a back scabbard wasn't ever used. It would make sense to use one if you had to carry a very long sword for a considerable distance, and had to have both hands free for other tasks.
That being said, I do doubt that it was ever used in combat. Too slow, can't draw it inside, ect. You would have to have a smaller weapon on your hip for when this happened, or have your bid sword already out.
For the most part, large swords were carried without scabbards, or on a weapons cart, or by a porter. (servant who follows you around, like Patsy in the Holy Grail.)

windless had one that was workable it held the hilt on hooks and the frist third of the blade just below the waist so after the draw you would be in attack position

I want to say that the pre-Norse (6th cent. Migration Era) had swords on baldrics, which hung very low on their backs, relative to what we think of them being. Not sure if it was a battle solution or just a transport issue. I would look at the Sutton Hoo burials for more information.
Or I could just be completely forgetting the right time.

Scabbards on the lower back are perfectly plausible. The myth is the scabbards where the hilt is over one shoulder and the blade can be drawn from that position.

it's a shame windless discontinued that one they had ...... cause there is no way your gonna draw a 30+ inch blade from your back in a full size sheath unless you have some massively long ape arms
