Baldric. There's no evidence for vikings ever using belts to hold their swords. They all used baldrics.

No, a belt goes around your waste. A baldric is looped around your shoulder and opposite hip.
Edit: Whoops, I thought you just said viking swords.
Vikings used baldrics, medieval folk used belts. For the most part anyways.

I don't think it's that important as long as it isn't dragging on the ground

It matters for costume portrayal.
I'm leaning towards DI's answer, however I'd not be suprised one bit if many in the middle ages wore baldrics and many in the viking times wore sword belts.

Seems to me a baldic would be more comfortable.

Double wrap belt with 12th c. suspension is very comfortably, but don't try it on anything larger than, say, 45 inches. Gets a bit unwieldy after that.
What I fnd strange is this: The japanese tend to support most of the weight of their gear on the hips, while the europeans tend to use the shoulders instead. It's interesting to see that the europeans support their swords on the waist instead of the expected shoulders.

I'm just saying, all the evidence we have of the way vikings and saxons wore their swords, (Bayeux Tapestry, Sagas, various carved figures) point to belts being worn to hold pouches, seax and various other things, and a baldric being used to hold the sword.
I'm not saying that vikings didn't use belts to hold swords, just that it was probably very uncommon.
What do you mean by gear? Armour? I thought that both cultures used belts to move loads onto the waist as well as the shoulders.

Armour, typically.
Japanese armour is designed around the ideal japanese male body which is a broader waist. The europeans designed their armour around the perfect european male body as well, but that's much differet - slim waist and broad shoulders.

How about Ninjas? Why do you guys think Ninjas carried their swords differently (on the back)? and is it an accurate historical depiction of how they carried their swords?

Including the " 'tis" part? Cause if so, you and me both use antiquated language when speaking to ourselves . Oh, believe me, I do. And it comes out when speaking to others as well. I think it must come from reading all those redwall books as a kid, I dont see where it could have come from anywhere else.
