Hi there forumites.
99% of you won't remember me, as I've been not actively engaged in the sword community for about 3 1/2 years now, but I was actually one of the very first members of the very first SBG-Sword-Forum. And, as certain family members are wont to remind me, I wrote an ebook about swordsmanship that you can download from the main SBG site(though it's long-overdue for an overhaul - my technique has evolved a lot since then).
Anyway - I'm getting married in june, and we're doing a Celtic/Scottish themed wedding, since my fiance and I both are of scottish heritage.
In order to complete the groom's outfit, we're hoping to get a scottish-styled sword, and the Albion Laird is a bit pricey for us.
I've heard that Hanwei's scottish swords are the best basket-hilts you can get, but I really like the aesthetic of ColdSteel's blued basket and the shape of the blade.
What some may or may not remember is that years ago, Cold Steel's scottish basket-hilt came in two variants, as most do(one with two edges, the other as a 'backsword' with one), and that something like 4-5 years ago they changed up their model line and the blade of their basket-hilt sword changed quite a bit.
I've had a lot of experience with the old one (which was definitely on the heavy and unwieldy side of the spectrum), but I have basically no information on how the new one compares to the old one - no website or review gets into the specifics of what changed, offers comparison photos and comments.
Rumor had it back in the day that the change happened because Cold Steel changed forges for their european line and that it's actually made by Windlass now. I have no idea if that's true.
So, basically I'm here hoping for information on these swords and if I'm lucky, someone who owns one or at least has handled one on more than one occasion to chime in with their thoughts. Best case scenario: A sweet review.
That is all.
