Thanks Rabbit, been trying to answer the question for years. I know its not exactly practical to defend your home with a blade but I'm a better martial artist than i am a marksman. Anyway, thanks again for the help. Hope you have a pleasant evening. For tighter quarters ( hallways in the home) you would want a Wakizashi, Ko Katana, or other short sword about 20".
For HD a 18" 5 shot Mossberg or cheaper cousin the Maverick, with #4 Buck is hard to beat, at very close quarters say under 7 yards ( 6.5 Meters) you just need to go for center mass. Yes you could in theory still miss at close range, but at least it won't over penetrate too much even in sheet rock ( should penetrate about 6 sheets or max 3 sheet rock walls). If your very Recoil and Noise sensitive you could try 10/22 with the Bx-25 ( 25 round) mags, but you will need a lot of hits to take down a real BG with .22 LR. Keep in mind a .22 Lr is still loud indoors. It's always nice to remember a pair of electronic ear muffs (like Walker's, they are cheap) that dampen noise yet allow you to hear.
The great thing about a .22 rifle is you can practice until you are proficient.
