However, the difference is minimal so if you need a durable cutter (a beater), I would go with mono-steel. Much cheaper and you can just beat things up with it without worrying about scratches and stuff ruining that pretty folded steel blade

OK... I'm going to continue this thread. Hopefully some of you will be able to offer advice. I've found a few folded steel swords in the $100 - $125 range on e-Bay that at first glance seem like they'd be OK. Kingrikoraru indicates that folded/laminated steel holds a better edge. I guess I have to take that on faith. I do like the way they look. Swordmaker688 offers clay tempered (water quench, traditional?) folded steel katanas starting around $235. One assumes you gotta pay for quality. I really like the fittings on the sword below. I particularly like the habaki. Clay tempered mono-steel seems to be in the same price range. Swordmaker688 has a series listed as " 1060 High Carbon Steel" all of which list at $92, then there are folded AISI 1060 High Carbon Steel swords starting around $117 up to around $175. So... with all of that in mind. Are the folded AISI 1060 High Carbon Steel blades superior to the non-folded AISI 1060 High Carbon Steel blades. I can purchase a Musashi (brand) Gekkou Katana from Heavenly Swords in Chicago for $99.98. I could probably drive there to pick it up & save on shipping. Not to mention relatively instant gratification. The Musashi Gekkou is kinda plain Jane but looks more practical and they are in stock. They claim the following about it. Hand forged 1060 high carbon steel blade with bo hi Hand sharpened Beautiful hamon Black iron sukashi style tsuba Black brass fuchi and kashira with dragon theme Rayskin and cotton wrapped tsuka Black lacquered wood saya Fully functional Comes with black sword bag and serialized certificate Any of you guys have any experiences with Musashi swords or Heavenly Swords in general?

I believe trueswords got better price on musashi, which is a good beat on its own right. They only thing is that they'll most likely not be very eye pleasing.

Just went to have a look... here's the hype from the web site. Musashi - 1060 Carbon Steel - Bamboo Warrior Sword - Black Saya [TS-FTMUSK37] Only $79.99 I'll be calling these guys tomorrow. The ultimate bamboo handmade by Musashi! Part of a new 1060 high carbon series from Musashi, the focus of this production was to forge the best blade possible for under $100. With the result being well within that goal, this blade is nothing short of an excellent value. Handmade, the blade hamon is formed by the clay temper process during production. The blade is differentially hardened and comes extremely sharp! Like the more expensive models, this blade can even be bent 45 degrees and will return to the straight and true form. Art of bamboo, the tsuba, fuchi, both menuki, and kashira are all made up of bamboo artwork. This sword is well balanced and the tight handle wrap feels great. Comes complete with a black cotton storage bag and Musashi retail box. Materials and Way of Forge: Traditional hand forge Muku-kitae method. 1060 High Carbon Steel with clay temper process. 55 HRC blade hardness. Hamon and hardness created with temper process. Real hamon, not wire brushed or printed. Real ray skin wrapped grip with black cotton cord wrap. Extremely sharp hand honed edge. Steel tsuba, fuchi, and kashira; Brass habaki. Can be disassembled for care or display. Dual bamboo mekugi (peg), hardwood handle. Hardwood scabbard with high quality piano paint finish. 39 3/4 in. overall, 27 1/2 in. blade, 10 3/4 in. handle. Includes black cotton sword storage/carry bag. Anyone have one of these? Any first hand knowledge before I make a fool out of myself? I can always change out the tsuba & habaki, in fact that's something I'll do straight away. I'd like to change out the tsukamaki, maybe have Josh at Cottontail redo the tsuka. So what can you tell me about these Musashi swords? Do you think this is the way to go for a first Kat?

The folded steel itself won't wold a better edge, the only advantage it has is a pretty 'hada' or pattern in the steel. A DH (differntially hardened or clay hardened) sword will hold a better edge, but wont be as tough a blade overall as a through hardened model, which won't hold its edge as well. It's a trade=off on all blades. Makes no difference whether its monosteel of folded, folded is more likely to have imperfections which weaken the blade on a cheaply forged version, and will cost more.

These blades are one of the best budget katana that came out recently. Real hamon, differentially hardened. It's one of the best you can get with a tight budget. Here's a more in depth review. If you do have a bi more money, I do suggest going with the elite series ( www.trueswords.com/musashi-folde ... -6094.html) as it'll last you a while until you move up to the 300s range, if not, any of the bamboo warriors will do just as well.

I've been spending some time hunting down a few parts that I'd get to turn a plain Jane Musashi Bamboo Warrior into something a bit more to my taste. Found the habaki I want & the same guys also have a nice variety of iron & brass tsubas ? what's more traditional for a tsuba, iron or brass? I kinda like this one for a bamboo warrior.Ultimately I'd like the wrap to be a pale brown... sorta like this but with black samegawa.

I have two of "swordmaker688" 1060 folded blades, they are excellent value and hold a good edge, Rob has one of the DH folded blades and has written an in depth review.

I don't think hunting down parts to customize a pretty low end sword is a great idea. Save that for something better is what I would do

well... a Musashi (brand) Bamboo Warrior might be low end... but it's only $80 and I can make it a little nicer and still keep it under $125 (probably, I hope) over the course of a month or 6 weeks. Besides, it's not like I'm gonna be wearing an obi and carrying it on the street (in case I run into rampaging zombies) So any sword I get, either the first one or in the future, is going to spend a LOT more time displayed on a rack than it will in my hand... so I'm thinking of it as an art project. I doubt I'll spend as much on customizing it as I do on one bottle of single malt whiskey. And I'm willing to bet that any katana I purchase is going to last longer than any bottle of scotch I'll ever buy.
It's like I told my brother after mom died and he asked what I spent the inheritance money on, "Gee Dave, I spend most of it on scotch, cigars and trashy women. The rest of it, I just wasted."

Also, have you considered buying it used from our members. Most of the swords are very well maintained and you get it at a good price

I believe Cottontail Customs offers customized Musashi blades with whatever fittings you'd like. You can get your habaki and brown ito, etc from Josh in one go. If I'm not mistaken, that is.

Hey, since you're talking Katana now, mind taking it to the katana forum? I don't mean to be rude, though I tend to be too blunt to be otherwise, but it's been several pages now of just katana rather than anything Chinese.

Good point. How did this end up in the Chinese swords section anyway?
If it helps, the Chinese Swords section is for Chinese style swords, not Chinese made Japanese style swords, so best it be moved to the Japanese swords section!

Katana? by kingrikoraru » Mon Oct 22, 2012 9:41 am The OP, Kingrikoraru, who started this topic thread put it here in the Chinese Sword section because originally he was discussing Chinese type swords (Dao & Jian) made by Chinese forges. I posted a question about katana, and had to join the forum to do so... because I'm a complete noob and the title of the post was Katana?. I mistakenly thought the OP posted to the Chinese Swords area because the swords were manufactured/forged in China.
I guess I sorta hijacked this topic thread with a question about a particular e-Bay katana seller or maker. I have no permission to move or edit the OP's post/topic. But you're right, this whole thread should be in the Japanese Swords area. If the OP or the forum Admin move the topic, I'll be happy as long as I can still find it. Several people who posted replies to my questions have been incredibly helpful.

I don't have any problems with a used sword. Anything I buy will be "used" as soon as I open the packaging. I've been hoping someone would post something tasty in the Classified Section. I missed a couple that looked good by a few days. Hopefully someone will post something I can't pass up.

the T10 Light Cutter Munetoshi is on there for a very good price. there are a couple huawei and st-nihonto for pretty cheap. Below are a couple of swords that are at a good price. I also have one for sale for about 100 but the blade needs a really good polishing so yea. Good luck. Oh I started this in the general section because the sword looks japanese, but could be chinese and we came to the conclusion that it was chinese so it was moved here a tad after Otto started posting. viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13827viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13592viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13656

Don't have to move thethread. Just the discussion would be enough.
