What about the DSA bastard saber or Swiss saber? I don't have any personal experience with either but IIRC they got decent reviews. Personally I like the look of the bastard saber and will probably add one to my collection at some point. www.darksword-armory.com/product ... 327-saber/ www.darksword-armory.com/product ... iss-saber/

These concepts are not mutually exclusive, and all historically accurate blades are functional. I would argue any historically accurate sword is far more functional than the vast majority of swords which do not follow history. People lived and they died by these swords, the types of blades we see throughout history were not "hey this looks cool", they were "this is an excellent design to kill my enemy."
It's absurd to think that we can create more functional swords than our historical counterparts did. When you look at the top-performing blades being made, they are all based heavily (if not entirely) on historical pieces.

Has anyone here even heard of someone buying one of those blue handled DSA Hand and Half Sabers??
I can not recollect anyone on any of the boards fessing up to buying one since they were first introduced.

I vaguely recall there was a review of one on the old boards, but yeah, I don't think those sabers are very popular...

The Lutel sounds very good, and Lord knows I'd hardly dissuade you given that I've had my eye on that one for a while and plans to get one some time soon. But might I also recommend--as I've done twice to great satisfaction--that you consider getting a Hanwei Dark Sentinel and rehilting it Swiss sabre style? There's a variety of ways to try that (and in fact I'm constantly resisting, at the price, buying yet another one to tinker with more variations of doing it! Draining away funds in hundred-dollar increments is insidiously tempting. )

Well, first off: I made a stupid back there, what with Historical Accuracy Versus Functionality. Aaron is right Now then. I always considered the Lutel 11006 Sabre rather than the 11005, for reasons I don't even remember myself (The 15023 is too expensive by far). But now that the 11005 has been mentioned, I took another long look at it, and...damn! The guard is a little too pretty for my taste, but apart from that - assuming that previous comments regarding its overall quality are accurate - it's just about perfect. Can anyone with more knowledge than myself give me some thoughts on the differences between the 11005 and the 11006?

I understand that Lutel is quite willing to accommodate customer requests.... couldn't hurt to email them before purchasing, if that's what you decide to go for... just make sure you're ordering from Lutel Handicraft and not Lutel.eu!

You can always go for one of these: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... d+Falchion There is just something about Maciejowski Falchions I just love. They are pretty scary looking too.

There is an excellent review of the 11006 Saber on MyArmoury- HERE Besides the obvious differences in the grip and furniture, the only thing that really jumps out about the blades is the fact that the 11006 is unfullered while the 11005 has a fuller. Lutel will mix and match blades with different furniture from their catalogued items. You could get an 11005 blade with the 11006 hilt work if you so choose. This discussion deals with that very idea- LUTEL Saber furniture swap

Problem is the price. And shipping from the US. Ordering the 11005 from KoA would cost a European at least 50% more than ordering it from Lutel-Handicraft.

I've been flirting with that piece since it went live on their site. I'm over committed right now so there's no way, short of a windfall of cash, that I could get it. Maybe for Christmas? Really nice looking sword and I like it much more than I thought I would.

I'm sure that even if Czech laws require swords to be blunt like Italy, Marek would be happy to make a piece with a narrow enough bevel that you can sharpen it up yourself without too much trouble for you a la Del Tin... something that I hear pretty frequently about Euro makers, they're pretty good about tweaking pieces for customers' requests.
