If I cut off the threads and peen the pommel onto the hanwei tinker longsword will this change in length affect the blade a ton? Harmonics-wise that is?
Anyone with such a sword?

Hmmm.. Maybe ask Ernie R. from Yeshua's sword, he has peened several HT's.

You may already know this but you'll need to modify the pommel itself a good bit to accomplish this as well.
The base of the pommel (handle end) will need to be widened to slide farther down the tang. Also the rectangular channel will need to be extended where the threaded portion normally goes through.
To get an idea how it'll change the sword dynamics just take the pommel and grip off and affix it to the side of the tang with some rubber bands where you think it will need to go. You'll need to secure the guard too, of course. This should give you a rough idea of where the rotational and vibration nodes will end up.
If you find the grip isn't long enough any more you can fairly easily grind the blade shoulders up farther to push the guard up. I like using a carbide grinding burr of appropriate width, makes a nice rounded shoulder.
Sounds like fun, good luck! Blake

Jer- I was just on Ernie's site thinking of buying some parts since I never did get around to making my own. But as always I reverted back to wanting to diy it but peened this time, instead of the plans of old I had to make a pommel a'la threaded tang. Good idea still to ask Ernie what he thought of the changes from peening. Blake- Thank you for the info- I do know what it'll take I have just a bare blade though as I always had plans to make my own hilt. I actually got some weights and numbers from Tinker a couple of years ago but I didn't talk with him about how the harmoincs would change if I cut down the tang and shortened the overall length. I would likely move the shoulders up a 1/4 inch and banzai peen the cross as well as peen and banzai peen the pommel. That is of course if I ever get off my duff and start shaping some steel lol Every so often I look over the bare blade and go back and forth from "just sell it man, you've done nothing with it" to "at least buy some parts for it man| to "one day, one day, I'll finally make my own parts"

I did just that and it turned out fine. No worry.

Yep. The part right below the former threads was used for the peen. Didn't move the shoulders forward though, thought the grip was long enough.

Wow chenessfan that looked REALLY cool. Also so does the sword in your signature. May I ask what it is?

I cut the threads off a HT EMSHS blade, ground the shoulders of the blade forward, filed out a VA pommel to fit and peened the whole thing together. it was a chore but if you are going that far you can go ahead and custom adjust the weight of the pommel to make the harmonics and such work out right.
less is typically more when it comes to pommels. you don't really need a large heavy pommel for most swords.

Just found this thread. Looking at doing similar myself but with the Hanwei early medieval bare blade. Though have been considering the longsword bare blade. How long is the threaded section on the tang? trying to get an idea and as much information as I can before I start. First fitting project.

Check out the Construction Database, about 1/2 way down the 1st page for H/T tang specs sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/40975/sword-construction-data-base
