greetings.
got a rather technical question and wasnt sure where to post it and as i thought if i knew the answer id not be a beginner thus ill post it here.
now im getting sonny from VA to put together a sword for heavy combat use and here what im planing of putting together all of which im sure most of you will be familiar with.
Pommel from the Malatesta Handle from The Kriegschwert Cross guard from the Kriegschwert Blade from the Malatesta Scabbard from the Malatesta
my biggest concern will be the harmonics of the sword as the pommel weight will be different for the length and weight handle/ cross guard than the blade and pommel was originally designed for. also this may alter the balance slightly but im thinking minimal and id possibly never notice.
secondly i believe the blade comes sharpened which i wont be able to use and ill need to bring the edge it to a minimum of 1mm to meet the requirements in which ill be fighting. this will result in a weight reduction of the blade pulling the balance back further into the hand and again possibly effecting the harmonics of the sword. will there be enough taper on the blade to remove the edge and still carry a good amount for force through a swing.
does anyone see a concern here. or should i look for a different sword all together?

Talk to Sonny if you can about blunting it. He may be able, though this will definitely take longer, to order one with a thick edge but the same dimensions from his forge in China. Worth a try.

I can't say about the harmonics but I'm sure others who've mixed and matched will be able to offer their experience. Regarding the edge I believe Sonny puts it on when he gets the blade - if so you might have good luck in simply asking him to forgo doing anything to the edge and leave it for you to do what you like.

Whoa, whoa, guys---there is no way Sonny can make one of his sharps safe enough for "heavy combat use" and "fighting" other people simply by dulling it. They are not built for training, they are built for killing.
Get something else entirely, like an Atrim I Beam or an Albion Liechtenauer or Epée de Guerre that are designed for contact. The pommel is a non-issue, since safety should supercede it.

It certainly would not be used as a sharp for combat a big no no. Hence the blunting of the blade down to 1mm edge. And if the come from china with out edge that would be perfect. I'll ask sonny about this further.

No no no, you're not getting me---the geometry of the sword is too thin to be safe, it won't matter if it's not sharpened. It's not built or shaped correctly. You need a sword that is designed for contact. The Albion Liechtenauer is that sort of sword, and it has the scent stopper pommel and type of guard you are considering. www.albion-swords.com/swords/alb ... enauer.htm

Seconded.
The edge will be too thin no matter what you do to it. The sword wasn't designed to be blunted to that degree. Even if you manage to mash the edge down it'll get chewed up by swords like the Albions and A&A's. Save yourself the headache and just get a sword that's designed with a safe sparring edge.

Yep - get a blunt designed for contact.
