Albion NG Vigil :A Tale of Financial Irresponsibility
by Filippo "Kittenslayer/I see pink elephants" Fantini, 1 March 2012, Italy
Everybody knows Brian Kunz..and everyone knows he is a very talented individual who makes very attractive condoms for swords. But his contribution in all of this is greater than just selling a sword. He taught me a word, 2 words, which I never thought that could go together so well: Financial irresponsibility. From that moment, I started using those 2 words in EVERY occasion I could, collecting great deals of feedback from the gentle ( ) sex.. "wow..such an erudite man!" "I bet he is a good party for marriage". Gotta tell you, male swordsmen.. "financial irresponsibility" is a pant-tearer with women..
Now onto the sword. I tried only 3 of the little swords in my life, two of those were Del-Tins and an Albion Sovereign. I liked some feature of single-handers here and there..UNTIL NOW. Read on..
TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
Steel: 6150, tempered to an average of 54 HrC
Sword Lenght: 97 cm (37,9 inches)
Blade: Oakeshott type X with double fullers and flared shoulders. The blade has noticeable distal tapering, being 5 mm at the base and ending in a 1 mm thickness at the point. It is 81 cm long (32 inches) and 2.375 wide (6 cm). The blade is not thumb-cutting sharp.
Guard: Style 2, ending in rounded finials.
Grip: Interlaced "Badass" leather strips and bright buttons. A Chevalier grip.. (the Albion Oakeshott with the gay pommel). It is 3,86 inches long (10 cm). I have HUGE hands, and have to put all the "meat" on the pommel..
Pommel: type I. it is a bit "oval".
Weight: 2.5 lbs ( 1,15 Kg)
CoG: 11 cm (4,3 inches)
CoP: 57 cm (22,35 inches)
This blade shows great flex..the flex of a dedicated cutting cleaver (I mean its cutting power..). Nothing too overly, mind you.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
It is of the same line of the Viking limb-shorteners..not quite my area of interest, I must say. The original River Witham is datable to 1100-1150. It would fit well with a buckler..
DYNAMICAL OVERVIEW
Now for the fun part! This sword is WEIGHTLESS when held still but when in movement (and the pommel certainly helps here..) it shows all its presence- this thing could cut a person in two with a good hearty blow. When you look at it, in its tidy box, the word "brute chopper" .. and this is exactly the best definition in regards of this sword's cutting power. DEVASTATING. There is nothing more to say, really.. lightning-fast recovery, VERY authoritative cutting and..poor thrusting. Sorry guys, in 1150 they used rapiers as Martini-mixers..
TEST CUTTING
 La la la..la di la llaa la la.. *whistles nonchalantly* trolololo.. *wistles nonchalantly*
FINAL THOUGHTS
This sword represents my conversion to little swords. The Vigil's blade presence must be seen to be believed..and the handling is TRULY flawless. STRONGLY advised. I was impressed..and I am a longsword guy (with interest in later periods..). I think that this is one of the finest Oversized Toothpicks in the market: you know that it is true every time you hold it in your hand.. and Brian agrees.
Thanks for the sword, Brian. And thanks for having improved my lexicon. I know this has been a difficult one to let go.
