Greeting All! I have looked at many blades with that mark and they all seem to be stainless steel...is that true? Thanks! CW.

The great majority of modern 'Toledo' swords are wall-hangers, yes. Actual Toledo-made functional blades are pretty much all antiques nowadays. For some reason the whole 'made in Toledo' reputation has hung around a little bit but the whole stink of wall-hangers taints it a good bit...

So true... My wife has a co-worker in the Navy, and her co-worker is married to a former Marine from Spain. He saw my sword collection and said 'Do you have any swords from Toledo?' to which I said 'Uh, no.' and he starts in with the 'A shame. All of the best swords come from Toledo you know...' I started to explain to him that once upon a time the region was famous for quality swords... but now they are famous only for stainless steel SLO tourist trap pieces of trash. Alas... he would not listen.

Thanks guy's! Yeah Shadow...being an old ex jarhead myself I know what you mean. It seems that some marines, once they make they're mind up about something, have to have a road map back to reality. So the blades I have looked at are mostly on ebay and are supposed to be antiques....uh huh...and the old ones don't have "stainless" stamped on them so I guess I need a reference to good book that I can read up on. I'm really getting into the antique sword thing. I am learning how not to bid against the big guns on ebay by jotting down their suedo names on ebay such as "a***a" for an example, I don't know that anyone has that one on ebay, but I've been hammered a couple of times before I caught on and I hate to drive the price up for them when I can't outbid them anyway. Anyway a good reference to a book would be most helpful...Thank you! CW.

I love our Marines... I hated them for a long time since I took the worst beating of my life from a pack of 3 marines when I was young... but later I got to know some other Marines and stopped judging em all by the actions of a few. Besides... I was looking for a fight that night... just not with 3 of em. Not sure Marines from Spain or other countries have quite the same culture as ours do. As to Ebay and antiques... I would warn against that. Its HARD to judge something as a true antique or not from a few pics and a sellers inscription... and when it comes to sellers like that on Ebay its a minefield. 99% of em are rip off artists... and unless you really know your stuff its to easy to get screwed. As a side job I used to buy cars off Ebay, fly out pick em up, drive em back home and re=sell em. It was VERY tricky work... so I stuck to makes and models I knew very well... which since i worked for a dealership group meant models that we sold and i dealt with day to day. I wouldn't mess with antique swords on Ebay because I'm not educated enough to judge the fakes. Be careful brother.

If it says Toledo - "dated", and it's prior to WWI I'd be comfortable with it being a carbon steel blade and a decent repro.
If it just says Toledo with not date, pass on it. Got embroiled on ebay in a fight for a beautiful replica of a 1783 Carlos III broadsword. Sold for $800.00. ( Bid closed while I was at work, dang it! )

I resemble that remark... I learned a long time ago, spending 10k-15k a pop on cars... bid sniping is the only way to go on Ebay. Don't hate the player, hate the game yo.
