Odingaard recently sold his CSS-customized Warsword in record time, and on its way to Kittenslayer in Italy I had a chance to inspect it and prepare it for the journey overseas. Took a few pics to share, even though it's all dark and snowy over here in CO.
The sword is built on an AT1435 blade and it is a MONSTER. The VA scabbard is lovely, and surprisingly robust.
Sonny's leatherwork, Antiquing, and etching are top-notch on this package. I love the laced buckle and the chape on this one--might be my favorite CSS scabbard I've come across. Some VA scabbards feel a bit delicate, but this one is sturdy. It's bittersweet getting a look at this thing and then having to box it up and send it away. VURRY nice.
The sword begs for comparison to the Austrian Warsword/XIIa.4, so here are some side-by-sides below. The 1435 is, for the sake of simplicity, a bit burlier beast. It's longer in the blade and hilt, stiffer, and a little more massive. The profile taper and width are very similar--in fact, the Austrian fits the 1435 scabbard quite nicely. The double fullers on the 1435 look smexy and mean. The tip geometry is a sharp diamond, rather than the smooth hexagon of the XIIa.4/Austrian.
In handling, the 1435 hits with a bit more authority, while the Austrian is more agile. The 1435 is still an Atrim, though-- it moves well and goes where you want it. Pretty darn maneuverable for such an imposing blade. I feel like Boromir would have a lot of fun swinging this sword around and cleaving enemies in twain. (Which makes a lot of sense when you remember that Odingaard comissioned it, since he pretty much IS Boromir. )
Now to pack this one up and send it on its way. It's been nice getting a glance at it, thought I'd share my sneak peek with y'all.
Thanks for looking.
