This originally started for DIY resources for armor, but has recently expanded to include vendors (both supply and ready made) and even clothing, as in later centuries a swordsman didn't commonly wear much or any armor at all. I hope this can serve as a resource to all of us here who wish to have something to go with our swords, for display or wearing, or in some cases actually fighting in.
Please feel free to add links in replies and comment, and I'll edit the OP as needed. I know mostly Euro work, as do many others here, so that will likely be the bulk of this, at first! However I am very eager for our Eastern-centric friends and other cultures to share their pieces too! I'll be keeping a current revision list at the bottom of this post, so you can see how up to date things are.
-General Resources-
- forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/index.php : A great forum dedicated to armor, with good how-to's and active community.
-European Armor-0AD/BCE and Beyond
- www.armourarchive.org/patterns/ : Everything from basket and cup hilts to arming caps and sugarloaf helmets.
- www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/perfect_armor.html : Great starting point for Byzantine armor. Mild historical issues may result here and there.
- yeoldegaffers.com/project_shieldpress.asp : Useful tool for making nearly any shield with curvature in it.
- yeoldegaffers.com/project_shield.asp : Measurements/patterns for some shield types.
- www.wikihow.com/Make-Chainmail : I'm aware it's not the greatest maile tutorial, but it's visual helped me tons.
- www.arador.com/construction/index.html : A good list of general how-to's
- www.scatoday.net/node/4252 : SCA armor list and help guide.
- elvestidor.files.wordpress.com/2 ... ouring.pdf : An amazing PDF that lists tools, materials, and guides/plans for full leather and metal plate armor.
- almogavares.foros.ws/t934/patron ... mas-cosas/ : A good link, in Spanish, but it provides an extensive collection for gauntlets, greaves, arms/elbow/bicep, spaulders, and various accessories.
- almogavares.foros.ws/f18/equipo- ... estimenta/ : The general tutorials section from the above link, it has a wealth of pictures and such. Spanish makes some of it less useful, but lots of inspiration for various pieces.
-Asian/Oriental Armor-Of no particular time period unless stated
- www.wakagashira.com/make/patterns/index.htm : This is one of the few sites i've seen showing any kind of 'DIY' on "samurai armor".
- www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/katchu.html : An in depth and more exhaustive how to on samurai armor, focusing on specific parts in detail rather than a brief over-view and templates. Not as friendly to beginners as Wakagashira link though.
- www.myarmoury.com/feature_jpn_armour.php?print : Less on patterns, but detailed pictures and diagrams, even with a "how-to" on the proper order and method of donning Japanese armor, and some info on clothing worn under, and accessories.
-Fantasy Armor-
- zapan99.deviantart.com/art/Orcki ... -261109598 : Orcish Armor Pattern.
-European Clothing-0AD/BCE and Beyond
*While not armor, the clothes under it were just as important back then, so I feel they merit mentioning
- virtuater.free.fr/Medieval%20Cos ... France.pdf : Medieval clothing in England and France, 13th-15th centuries. It also has a small section on armor.
- www.vikingage.com/av/viking-outfit.pdf : Very straightforward, no nonsense piece with great illustrations on how to do what is described.
Revision List(current as of 2/5/2012):
*2/4/12: Added first Japanese armor link and created Asian/Oriental section, several European links from Almogavares de Europa forums. Added English/French and Viking clothing guides. Fantasy Armor section added, with first link on Orcish armor.
*2/9/12: Added two Japanese armor links, General Resources section and link to the Armor Archive forum
