wow this thread got off topic but ill keep it going on both parts....y destroy ur bokken when u can just make ur own out of some spare wood? i got a friend that makes some very amazing peices with just pine and other materials. im sure u can get ur hands on some quality wood near ya...but anyway now to the bokken sword self defence thing....i guess it would totally depend on the situation if my opponent had a knife or any bladed weapon i would want a staff because it would leave me safe while i can beat the living **** out of him now if he was un armed i would want a bokken. oh yea and for u guys that said u would want a non sharpened sword...be like kenshin himora and use a reverse blade sword LOL. but this is entirly hypothetical because honestly i doubt anyone would be walking around with a staff, sword, bokken, reverse blade =), naginata (i think thats how u spell it), or anything else. i think if i had to have anything for self defence for real it would be a tazer! ;D

How about shobo? Or a tonfa? Or better yet, a bow staff. Just swing wildy at the attacker.

@ Seth, by Bow Staff, do you mean BO as in RokushakuBO?
Sorry, just clarifying you didn't mean something different entirely.
Thanks, -Tajima

Sorry mate, Pine is a soft wood. Totally unsuitable for a contact training weapon.

That is correct, pine is soft. But bokken made of them actually last, edgewise, they are very dense, shock absorbent. It is odd, I seen a pine bokken in action before, no dents, and this was some great kata practice, swords clashed.
You can make tsuka of pine too, it doesn't matter how soft or hard a wood is, there are other things that affect performance. For instance, my bokken is very hard, no shock absorbence, when I clashed with another bokken, it traveled all the way to my hands, and I could feel and see that the tsuka cracked.

I can snap a 25mm diametre pine broomstick over my knee, I cannot snap a 25mm diametre white oak jo over my knee. This is test enough for me sal . Also, white oak compacts from constant impact where pine can split and seperate. Hardwood has the weight, and density I look for in a training weapon.
