I recently bought the Traditional Filipino Weapons dao, seen here traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Chinese%20Dan%20Dao.htmlThey also have a jian and a pair of butterfly swords. I'm no expert and I can't speak to the weapons historical accuracy, but for 220 dollars it's a lot of sword in my opinion. Solid and well built, the POB is slightly out there, being about seven inches out, making the sword somewhat blade heavy but then, it is a slashing weapon. It really wants to cut, when I hold it I feel it's potential as a bottle cutter. Mine arrived dull, that was the only knock against it, but Ron from TFW offered to replace it with a sharp one, he said these are all hand made and once in a while a flaw sneaks through. (I sharpened it myself) I believe Ron to be a man of integrity. and Traditional Filipino Weapons to be a company you can trust (In my limited experience with them) and (In my inexpert opinion) I recommend their dao, if you're looking for a good, solid sword and not some thin, wispy Wushu blade, give TFW a try.

Measured with a straight ruler (all I have handy) it's seven and a quarter inches. But it's actually a mite longer than that because it's curved.

I haven't tried to take the sword apart, but it's not a peen block. My guess is it's a nut of some kind. Vue, I intend to do a little review on this sword when I get the chance to do some cutting with her, I'll post some pictures then. Chuck, you're more then welcome, if anyone else wants any weights or measures let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Seven inches? That is WAY out there. There is no reason any sword should have that POB, except for calvary sword. Hopefully the jian is better balance because I really like the look of the jian.

I measured the point of balance, it's six and a half inches. So I stink on ice at estimating.

Umm . .. so far as I can tell, a lot of Migration Era swords had POBs out there, ditto lots of sabers. You do realize that the jian and dao are completely different weapons, right? (So far as I understand---maybe they're just "curved" and "straight" versions of the same thing, but like I say, that's not my understanding.)
A lightning quick check of KOA shows that the plain ol' Chinese dao (as distinct from the also choppy-choppy da-dao) from manufacturers from Hanwei to Kris to Dynasty Forge all have a POB between 6 and 8" out.
I'm not a student of CSA, maybe I'm wrong.

The TFW Jian has a PoB at about 5 inches out... or at least mine does. 7 inches is pretty normal as far as Dao go... I've handled a few that balanced between 6-7 inches out, its pretty normal for a Dao. They are used VERY differently then a Jian... they are powerful chopping weapons and that PoB reflects that.

It feels blade heavy, but in a good way. Definitely feels like a chopper-upper of a sword.

That's good to know. A friend of mine tried asking what the POB was but apparently Mr Kosakowski doesn't quite grasp the concept. The reply was basically: "I dunno, lol, I just sell these things. But this guy I know says they have good balance."
o___O
Aaaanyway, would love a review of that jian, since I do find it kinda interesting.

Congrats to Bill and Sean on their new TFW blades, I'll be looking forward to the reviews! And it's nice to get some POB info on these models, since Ron's not big on listing that or the weight of his products. Good guy to deal with, though; I think he's just busy with his school, and that there may be some variety in the specs of the blades he receives.

Thanks! This will be my first time reviewing a sword, so don't expect too much. I plan to do the review after I've cut with it, as I'll get some good outdoor pictures of her while cutting. I'll have my son, who's a much better cutter than I am, put her through her paces. I've always shied away from doing reviews, but I feel like doing one for this sword.
Yes, Ron is a good guy to deal with, I was very happy with the customer service from him, he certainly is enthusiastic about his products.

Don't worry, Bill, I've never done a review either (although I have made some threats).
