This can be anything from dirt to a sticky liquid. What is the best thing for getting blades free of gunk?

Isopropyl alcohol will work, as will Windex, and WD-40. I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions, as well.

I use MAAS polishing creme, its incredible as it is non-abrasive.
It works really really well.

Gasoline - dunk it and light it.
Seriously though gasoline works wonders for getting off sticky gunk. Dirt is easy - just wash it off with water and soap but sometimes you get sap or other crap on your blade so gasoline works wonderfully for that. WD-40 does too.

Neither have I really but I figure if this was a serious case of gunked up blade it would do. I prefer just to use isopropyl or WD-40. Either works well for minor cleaning.

I've found methylated spirits works well for cleaning just about anything from my blades.

When you guys say things like isopropyl, Wd40, or zippo lighter fluid, are you lighting it? I understand the materials now, not so much the process! please and thank you

I suggest not using water on carbon steel blades LOL. Isopropyl alcohol, petroleum 0.o (that's expensive XD), WD-40, and maybe liquid polishing compounds.
