Hi there everybody. I have recently bought this sword of an auction website and was wondering if any experts out there could possibly tell me if this sword is in in fact a proper UC certified sword or just a cheap knockoff as I did get it for quite a cheap price but it seemed more like the person selling it did not know its value. If anybody with knowledge could help me that would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Toganboy

tough to say for certain. It looks like the UC one but I can't be 100% certain. Did it come with a certificate of authenticity? All of the licensed ones did.
Also, you might get more responses in the fantasy sword section.

It's a cheap knockoff, sorry mate. I am 100% certain. Guard, blade, pommel, grip, and especially the scabbard are all off. The official one doesn't even come with a scabbard, and the scabbard you buy separately is much more elaborate (I owned one for a long time).
Still works for a nifty wallhanger, I suppose. But it ain't the UC official version.

Seconded. It's not a bad-looking piece, but the blade is the biggest giveaway here that it's not the official sword. It's too short and the fuller starts several inches down the blade (the official one runs under the guard as most historical fullers do). The blade also appears to be too narrow, though this could just be a trick of the lighting. The scabbard as Zach noted is another giveaway.
In all, it would still look good on the wall. If the hilt pieces are of decent construction (which I doubt as most wallhangers use a zinc alloy) you could use them for a custom project to build a sword closer to the film prop. Which would be cool to see.

I think the official one had engraving on the blade as well.

They do have engraving, or stenciling It could be only the limited editions have the engraving, but the example shown above is all wrong for a UC version. The UC scabbard

Yeah, UC wants you to know who makes their stuff. "It's a United Cutlery, and don't y'all forgit it!". The first sword-ish thing I ever picked up was a Glamdring wallhanger. This thing wasn't just a UC knockoff, it was a knockoff of a knockoff. It just had CHEAP written all over it. Check this out: You know how the official version has elvish runes lining the hilt? (Well, it does.) Well the one I got had English letters running along the hilt. English. Letters. ABC's. It also rattled like a maraca. But you better believe I felt like the King of badasses with this thing, it being my first swordy-thing ever!

Agreed 100% I've owned just about every sword UC makes from the LOTR films and that is beyond a doubt a knock off. You can tell with even just a quick glance of the hilt. Sorry if they said it was real.
