Hi, first of all this is my first post on these forums and normally I'd contribute more before asking questions, but there's been an ongoing issue with me for the past month or so that I'm trying to resolve. About 6 months ago I ordered a custom karambit from a blade smith that appeared to be reputable from other customers comments on some other blade forums (url here maniordknives.com/ ). I placed the order with him for a knife I designed myself and paid a $50 deposit, he said that he'd recieved it (by email) and supposedly commenced work. later, also by email, he sent a picture of my knife apparently almost finished and asked for the remainder of the payment. I sent the remaining $175 and... nothing. At first there was no response or confirmation of receipt of payment, but after 5 increasingly desparate emails or so, came one with a story of how he'd been having a rough time, health problems, he'd be right on it. At this point I was happy for contact of any time and just told him to finish when he could. a week or so later, I email again... nothing. about 3 weeks go by with none of my emails receiving any kind of response until finally one comes with a new story of a bad break up, time in jail, religous redemption and other details. he said he was pretty much done but had no money for shipping. this email was sent from a Blackberry. cue another three weeks to a month of no responses, and I finally get one about how he's been working on a barn and will mail the knife that week and it should be to me soon. I live less than 1000 miles away and in the same country and there's been no knife and no response for weeks. At what point do I yell SCAM! and is there any form of legal recourse for me if I have been scammed?

Ugh... This story sounds all to familiar... and any collector who has been around for awhile will have heard almost the exact same thing many times over. I don't know WHY this sort of thing is so common in our niche industry... but it is. I feel for you brother... the only comfort I can really offer you is that so far your out 225... which is VERY small compared to the amounts I have seen some people lose in exactly this sort of situation. As for at what point to call it quits and yell 'scam'... that depends on a lot of factors. How well you know and trust the smith, your own personal tolerance level, the specifics in question... and so on. Its impossible to give a hard and fast rule on this. Getting your money back threw legal recourse will be tough... as its interstate commerce and such a small amount (typically less then 500) it would be misdemeanor fraud at best and you'll have a hard time finding authorities to care. Best of luck man.

Like Sean said. You might be out some money. This guy may still come through with your order.
I have been lucky so far. The only not really bad thing I have experienced are smiths who take orders with a projected finish date and end up being way behind schedule for one reason or another. Since these guys are established, great people, make really nice swords and have a big customer following, I let it slide. Do not rush the masters!!

On his site he says that he will not be taking order at this point because he's full for the rest of the year.
He checked in at his you tube account 18 hours ago. So i hope for you that he's just very busy and not polite enough to keep you informed.

Hello Skirata I am sorry to hear about your problems with this maker. I hope you will eventualy get your knife or money. I don't know what legal options that you have. Personnaly, if you haven't already done so, I'd suggest that you ask the same question at bladeforums.com. It is a very large knife collecting forum. Maybe more people will be able to give you support overthere. Also, it may help other people in your situation to come out of the closet, if they are stuck with the same problems with the same guy. I hope this helps. Good luck man, and keep us informed

It is not just blades sadly. Another industry very famous for this sort of thing, is mechanics. Sort of worse due to they usually have your vehicle vs just your money. I have heard some serious horror stories of mechanic stalls and excuses. Not that all mechanics are bad, just like all bladesmiths aren't either.
This is why it is important to do some research about anyone you are going to do some business with like this, or know that you are taking a risk when you go into it. It is sad that this sort of thing happens, and with the economy like it is we will probably see more of this in not just bladesmiths but a lot of other industry.
My personal suggestion for you with the issue of the tardy bladesmith here. If you know where he is located, call up the local police dept. Let them know your trouble and ask them if this guy has had previous encounters with them. Especially since you mention the guy said he was recently in jail etc. If nothing else, you might help tip the police to keep an eye on the guy, or you might get a nice cop who will unofficially stop by and ask the guy what his problem is with your order. You never know. Rather than do nothing I would suggest this course of action. You might not get your knife or money, but you might prevent the guy from ripping off someone else.

thanks for the advice. I'll try his local pd if I don't get response by the end of this week, and I'll ask on blade forums as well.
