Can anybody who has a Tinker viking confirm if they have the same kind of damage on the pommel? Also I am very interested to see if anybody else has little bits of wood sticking up as per the picture below. Thanks to lokar on the old sbg site, who's photo this is.

Mine displays hammer marks from peening, but is much smoother than that example. More blended shall we say.
There is no evidence of any wood protruding from the peened area.
Perhaps you could contact the vendor and inquire if they would pick one with the cleanest appearing peened area for you?

mine is pretty darn clean, and no wood sticking out. i like the look of it, it really looks like some old viking swordsmith pounded her on.

I really can't say I see wood there. Sure that isn't just... I don't know, dirt? I think it looks perfectly fine. But then, I come from the school of thought that says a rough peen is just fine... I'd rather the sword be sharp and work well than be pretty

In lokar's original review he says that it is wood sticking out.
Kinda scary if it is!

Does anybody know what kind of metal the guard and pommel are made from? I ask because the tinker Norman has a stainless steel pommel. Thanks to all those who have replied, it is much appreciated!

its tough semprini w/e it is. dropped my viking off a 12 foot wall onto concrete. it landed pommel first, chipped the concrete. No damage to the pommel or sword except minor scuffs to the semi mirrored finish,

It's a stainless steel alloy also.

The Tinker line swords are not stainless steel I have heat blued the guard and pommel of my H/T Bastard and I was having a rust problem with the guard of my H/T Norman. And thank you Elheru Aran for that picture I have been having severe problems with griping my Norman now I should be able to cut with it without pain. Karma to you.

The guards and pommels on the H/T line vary. Some are stainless others aren't. The guard and pommel on the viking is in fact stainless. On my norman they are stainless also. My bastard sword guard and pommel is mild steel. By the way some stainless will rust, so it isn't a good indicator that it is mild steel. Try using a magnet, if it has a no/weak magnetic attraction then you have some type of stainless alloy. Also there is the suspicion that Hanwei may be mixing steels, using what is on hand, to make the guards and pommels. See this thread: forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?t=2880bender

I would not doubt it as I have a spot on my Bastard that wouldn't blue. However Tinker posted a thread in the manufacturers section saying that they are mild steel I cant find it now Ill keep looking and post the link when I find it.

Yeah I read that thread. Tinker has since acknowledged that Hanwei may be using stainless at times.
Here is what Tinker had to say:

I missed that statement I need to go and find that then. Thank you. However whatever it is I think that unless you are planning on bluing the furniture it does not really matter. I can understand how some people do not like it though.

I posted it already. I agree unless you are planning on bluing or antiquing etc. it doesn't matter. Though I can understand how not knowing this might be annoying.
