Okay so I need your help here guys. I am a University student and I've been on this fine forum since you guys migrated. I have scoured your posts all around and tried to butt into your conversations with my best knowledge. But I have unfortunately been quite poor for a year now, and there was simply no feasible way for me to afford a sword. I had much more important things to worry about. But just this week I have started a new job with my city and for the first time it is a regular salary with full time hours. And that means money!! So I'm still saving up for school and expenses but I am putting away 10% of each pay check for expenses. I am saving up and hope to reach 300 dollars soon. So here's my question.
What sword would you recommend for an amateur's first sword. I am looking for the best all around blade here. I am not interested in western/european swords. I am a Kung Fu Practitioner so the logical weapon would be of the Chinese type. But I have been very attracted to filipino swords, and If I do choose to purchase a filipino sword it will be from TFW.com
Anyways, throw suggestions at me and I'll post some swords that I'm interested in and you guys can shoot down my ideas if you want.
Thanks a lot!

Well... even among Chinese style swords and especially among Filipino swords there is a lot of variety... With Chinese swords... do you prefer Jian/Gim, Dao, DaDao...? What do you like in Filipino weapons?

Sorry I dunno why the whole message didn't come out. * sigh have to re-type it. Okay for Chinese swords I am 100% partial towards Jian blades. The Dadaos are simply no, and Daos can be passable but usually as reproductions of old dynasty daos. (example: www.kriscutlery.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/DAO_Q-LG.jpg) As for filipino weapons I really like straight blades as you can see with my penchant for the jian. I'll provide links in the next post for my preference of filipino weapons.

Gotcha... Sadly, on Jian/Gim swords there are not a lot of good options in the under 300 dollar range... I'm looking for a good Dao and Jian sword myself as the enxt parts of my collection. I've had a couple in the past, but nothing I feel in love with. The Hanwei Cutting Jian is one option... www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... ting+Sword I had one for a bit... I liked the way it looked, clean and attractive... I found the grip a bit large and the construction decent but not super solid. The Cold Steal Gim... www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Gim+Sword I had one of these and loved it. Very Attractive... razor sharp and and durable blade. Some complaints are that its not quite right balance and weight wise for CMA applications... but I found it to be a very good sword for a novice collector. The Kris Cutlery Gim... www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... m+II+Sword I had one of these... very plain looking but a very fast, super sharp agile sword. I've always been happy with Kris Cutlery products. The have another Jian sword that costs a little more that I've not yet handled... you can find it on their site. kriscutlery.com/documents/chinese.html You might be able to swing a Basic custom from Jin Shi Trading Company near the 300 mark... www.jin-shi.com/ I've not been able to handle one of their weapons personally... but I'd really like to. Those that have swords from them seem very happy with them. If you go up a bit from 300 you get a few other options... what I'd really like for my Dao and Jian are these: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Steel+Dao www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... Steel+Jian

Hey, Polar, I'm near your area. If you don't mind waiting, I've commissioned a jian from Jin-Shi, and if you'd like to dry handle it sometime....shoot me a pm.

Hey JP, I would love to, and I am going to have to wait to have a safety cushion before I make the purchase. But I don't have a car, so I'd have no way of getting to you. Thanks For the offer

Yeh... the Jian III is decent looking... I've just never handled one so I can't say anything about it one way or the other. The Folded Steel Jian and Folded Steal Dao... I love the look of those. Would love to pick em up.
I have this weapon... its awesome, unique... I dig the hell out of it.

Oh man... and? I'm just curious does it feel like it could take a beating? Does it cut well? Did it come sharp?
