Hi, I collect Japanese swords and while I am nowhere near an expert on them I know FAR less about European swords. I would like to buy my brother a medieval sword for his birthday. I bought him a 'battle ready' longsword off eBay a few years ago. This atrocity can't even be swung as it has spikes on crosspiece and pommel that dig into the wielder's hand! I nearly removed the pommel yesterday to check for a rat tail tang but stopped as i decided it was already worthless anyway. I haven't told him yet that his favourite ornament is only fit to be just that. I want to replace it with a functional medieval sword and I would like to tap into the knowledge on this forum so that I don't repeat my previous mistake.
Can anyone recommend any UK vendors? Out of these vendors can anyone recommend any tough beaters for under £150? I want him to be able to swing the sword and backyard cut without damaging it through poor technique.
Thank you for any help you can give.
Phill

you could try the knight shop, they have lots of medieval swords from Windlass, Tinker, Hanwei etc. Theres not really a lot in that price range in the UK, your best bet is to buy from Kult of Athena in the US, they have brilliant international postage and the swords themselves cost a lot less in dollars.

southern swords has never replied to any of my e-mails I have sent them. I don't really trust any vendor who cant be bothered to reply to questions about their products. I've bought a few katanas from blades UK and they are really helpful, though I think they focus more on katanas and stainless steel wall hangers.

In my experience its often cheaper to buy from the US, (even when you include shipping and import duty) then it is to buy here in the UK. Particularly if you keep your eye out for good deals.

WOW! I've only looked at southernswords.co.uk, I'm stunned by the amount of medieval swords available for £150 and below. I don't want to count any chickens before asking you guys about the quality of individual pieces but there are quite a few that are made by Hanwei, who have made all of the katana that I cut with. Perhaps I'm collecting the wrong style...

Doesn't hurt to have a mixture =), some swords styles definatley perform better than others in certain 'techniques' eg; thrusting, slicing.

Be careful with southernswords, they stock a LOT of tat. Also when comparing some of the swords I know, such as the tinker viking... they are a good bit more expensive than others. It may be worth asking if they will price-match a UK competitor but I don't see the point if they are non-communicative.

John Barnett swords, do they come under the tat category? At least with regards to actual cutting?

i have a john barnett seax, its not good nasty castings very bad edge ,pretty shoddily built really,so unless he's drastically improved his quality control (doubtfull) i'd avoid any of his work, there's much better quality and useable sword's to be had

Agreed with talon. They look ok in the low res pics but I would not buy any. Same goes for jgs swords, which are also awful. Try looking at theknightshop as they stock some decent stuff.
