Nice to see you working some forging into the projects, Bren. I'm still not enjoying the forging overly. Anyway I redid the axe head. It's forged though theres more forging to go. Then grinding, grip etc... It's gonna be a nasty little tool. You can see above how I twisted the top spike to hold the head on. When done hot enough I could twist it heaps with no cracks. I had to keep twisting it cos every time I straightened the top spike it loosened - so I left it crooked for now - I'm gonna forge it into a blade anyway.

Brenno, thanks for posting pics of your entry into forging (I am assuming based on a little reading in the forum that most of what you have done has been stock removal). I joined this forum to ask some of you about this very hobby (blacksmithing/swordmaking). Everyone here seems pretty nice and I don't expect to get flamed like I would on anvilfire for wanting to eventually make swords. For now I will read, study, read some more, study some more.... you get the idea. Anyway, keep at the forging! I hope I can start out so well. Of course I'll probably just be happy to make my own tongs for a while...

Yeah Beytill you'll hopefully get the help you need here. I started with a sword for my first project. Most people would say start with knives, but it's your choice if you stuff it up you lose. But its such a slow process theres not much that will stuff it.
Obviously you couldn't forge a sword very soon, but if you stock remove you can make anything you want. I'm still not sold on forging. I want to have it as a tool in my arsenal, but I'll primarily grind. Let me know if I can offer any help. And show us your projects.

With Dragon's Bane practically complete i spent today working on my War Axe. Ive forged a small blade on the top, its about 3mm thick and perfectly adequate for thrusting. I have purposely left the (amateur) forging marks all over it. I really wanted an antiquey, rustic, battle tool look about this. It's not for looking into while plucking your eyebrows if you know what I mean. Each part (the top blade / The axe head / The spike) has been quenched, and then twice tempered. The second tempering to give it that blue /purple colour, at about 260C. Now I just have to fit a grip, I have started a small cross / guard for it too. Stay tuned.

Holy crap that's amazing. I should run over to Australia (so fast I could run on water) and snatch it from you! As well as Dragons Bane. And pretty much all your weapons

Mak: You wouldn't get very far with his lovelies as I would hunt you down and ship you back to him for sword cutting practice

It'd be much easier to buy it from him, then steal the money back. Cash is way lighter than a sword! But, uh, Brenno, mate, I'd never do that!!

You can come and have a turn but you need to leave them here for the other kids to play with. Besides, now I know you're coming, I'll keep the axe under my pillow.

And watch out if you DO try to steal from him, he'll be drunk off of chocolate honey porter/syrup and cannot be held responsible for his choppins. Like the song "Dirty old town" says, I'm gonna make me a big sharp axe-- Shining steeeeeeel tempered in the fire! I'll chop you doooooown, Like an old, dead tree. Dirty old town, Dirty old town!
