Let this get your imagination started. Its 12mm (1.2") 9258 twisted, and now heat treated and tempered. It curved slightly in the heat, spew, it'll suck to try and straighten. I might just have to work with the curve. I havent decided whether to make it an axe or a hammer, probably an axe. It'll have a big ol' spike on the back, and either a spiky hammer or a small axe head.

Ooo, how about a big double-bitted axe?

Make a tribute to Thor, Bren. You have to do it now.

krieg - you know where I'm coming from. Thats pretty much the plan. I think I could have more use out of an axe head rather than a hammer. I want to forge a spike on the top after the head goes on too.
kc - I don't think this shaft could carry Thor's hammer head. Nah - it's not my thing. I'd just as soon buy a sledge hammer. In fact I have enough fun with my 1.5kg club hammer.

Weld a gun on it that can be triggered by a pull cable.

Yeah good one Seth. So I can shoot around corners. Maybe add a little periscope while I'm ata it.
Xan - Good idea, but I deffinately want a big spike on one side to see just how much evil penetrating power those things have. So the big question is whether to have a spikey hammer, or a small axe head on the other side.
I won't be making it for a little whil, coz of course I'm doing the Dragons Bain while I'm at it, and don't have enough spare time just now.
Cheers

Tonight I ground out some 12m flat bar into the axe head blank. I will forge it out into a blade of much greater size than the axe portion appears in this shot. Obviously 12mm has a lot of steel that will go toward the blade. The two waist sections will cop a 180 degree twist, mainly for looks. You can see how the shaft has a cutout for the head to sit at, and then tapers down. I will drill a 6mm hole in the head and then drift the tapered handle through it to spread it out to a perfect fit. Then to cap it off the top spike will be twisted to effectively peen the head in place. Clever hey. Thats my idea - I've never heard of it being done brfore. Then the top spike will be either forged into a blade, or a spike. But I figure since there will be a spike on the back, why not have a dagger on top? You can expect some very destructive testing to be done at the end of all this. That is; destructive on whatever gets in my way - I doubt this tool will get hurt. *extended maniacal laughter til fades out*

Not an original idea brenno, JUST TOLET YOU KNOW LOL. That is called a mortis and tenon joint, very common in old ironwork.

I meant twisting the spike to effectively peen it. I've never seen that before.

My sword was at the shop for heat treating last night so I took the chance to 'forge ahead' with my axe design. My forging of my axe head went so well and was almost finished when this crack appeared. It was a bit ambitious to try twisting that bit so tight. You can see below how it would have looked when done - except that the axe head is a little bent down. So that was fun and I learnt something. I have plans for version 2, and this won't be a problem. I really wanted to keep the twist for the aesthetics of the beast. It's all good fun.
