(Edit: Since the posting of this thread, JP has offered to refund $50.00 to me in recompense for the condition of the blade. I will leave the rest of this feedback for archival purposes, but I have decided that I would, in fact, do business with JP again. After looking at other feedback left, this was probably an isolated incident for JP.)
Ok, I've spent almost a week deciding if I wanted to post this.
I've contacted JP in regards to these issues and the response was flippant at best.
I purchased the H/T Fullered Bastard sword from him either March 24 or 25. It was finally shipped on April 06 and arrived a week later. This brings me to my first point. I can understand a few days delay in shipping out an item, but almost 2 weeks is far to long.
Now for the list of complaints:
Corrosion Prevention: This sword had none, or if it did, it did not have enough. I suspect that it didn't have any because I was able to see tarnish on the blade in the shape of finger prints. The pommel and guard both showed signs of corrosion, which considering the mirror polish of H/T furniture, says a lot about how little oil or grease was used.
Pommel: The pommel had arrived with a smokey corrosion on it. I asked JP about this and he said that it was how he got the blade. I would have greatly appreciated knowing this before buying the blade. I can only suspect that JP did not read the classifieds etiquette page about being as detailed as possible with the current condition of the blade.
Hex Nut: This is the area that I have the biggest problem with. The sword had arrived with the grip, pommel and nut attached to the blade. No problems here, lots of people ship them that way. But JP thought it would be a lovely idea to tighten the nut ALL THE WAY. What do I mean by all the way? Well, I almost couldn't get the hex wrench into the hole because the tang was that close. Now, if any of you have an H/T sword, you can probably go get it right now and try to put the hex nut on backwards. It won't fit. Why won't it fit? Because the hex hole is smaller then the threads. But what happens when you torque the hex nut as tight as you can? The hex shaped hole will start to eat the threads on the tang. There is now a grinding noise whenever the nut is turned and even when I'm extremely careful, the nut still grinds away some of the tang. I will probably have to turn this into a peened single hander because of the damage done to the threads.
Grip: The grip was 1/2" to short. When I tightened the nut as far as it would go, there was still play. This is not something that could not be casually missed by anyone on this forum, save for the newest of members.
Guard: Small patch of corrosion aside, the guard had arrived with what looked like hatchet marks in it. After becoming more familiar with the blade I realized that the guard would get stuck half way up the tang. I asked JP about this and he said that it might be vice marks from where he tried to get the guard over the tang, but it's funny that the "vice" marks were only on one side of the guard. These looks more like hammer marks, where someone tried to tap off the guard. Again, this isn't something that could be casually missed.
Blade: JP mentioned in the post that he had started sharpening one side of one edge. "No biggy" I thought, "Should save me some work." I will forgo any colorful description on what the blade looks like, but there were gouges in the blade that I haven't removed yet because it would take to much metal with it.
Scabbard: This is the least of the issues. There are some scratches on the flat of the chapes. Looks like it had been set on a garage floor and scooted around a bit. No harm was done to the functionality of the blade, but it was worth mentioning.
Price: I bought this blade for 100.00 USD and 25.00 to ship it. This would be a reasonable price for a second hand H/T Bastard, but I feel that this is entirely to high of a price for the blade that actually showed up. If I were selling this blade in the condition that I received it, I would ask $50.00 bucks, and even then I would make DAMN sure that the buyer knew EVERY flaw.
I know what you are thinking, why not just get your money back right? Well, here's the thing. If I were to ask for my money back and have him pay the return shipping, then the most he could make off of this blade would be $25.00. Take into consideration what he paid for it and he would have been better to just throw a 100 dollar bill in the trash.
However, the reason I am posting this feedback is to make the community aware. Had JP taken responsibility for his oversights, negligence or overall ignorance on how to sell a blade, then I would have tried to resolve this matter out of the public eye and would have just taken an apology for his incompetence.
But because he did not take responsibility and tried to deflect blame or made excuses, then I felt it necessary to bring my experience into the public forum.
Would I ever buy anything from JP again?
Never.
