Heh... I practiced martial arts when I was younger... 15-20. I used to practice in public parks because I had an apartment and no yard or space to speak of. I got some comments similar to yours... but not too many. I lived in a fairly small town where most everyone knew me. Adults didn't care, they new I was harmless... kids left me alone because I had a bit of a rep at school for having a really short temper (main reason I got into martial arts, to find some peace and control) so it was mostly all good. It tended to be kids a couple years older then me that would give me crap... and I'd just ignore it and consider it a lesson in inner calm and emotional control.

no, because only a few people know about it. Fellow classmates in martial arts, close family and a couple friends. My family is used to me getting into "odd" things.

Well here is a happy story to lift this thread up. I was talking to my site supervisor today and I said something about swords. He as really interested and asked more about which kinds I have. At the end he explained to me he was doing some sort of medieval theme/unit thing with his cubs group and asked if I could come in and show them what it was like to actually see a sword cut something. He was super excited about having me come in and give the kids a show to get them all excited. So not everyone reacts negatively. (bleh, 11 hours at work causes my usual linguistic elegance to lapse.)

I really like Randomnobody's first post on this thread - because that's pretty much about how it goes with me too.
My swords are displayed all over the house, so once people see they are truly serious swords that can do serious damage there is usually this respectful silence of admiration that comes over them - probably because they also suddenly realize it would not be a wise thing to make a mockery of a man who is wielding such an instrument of destruction in his hand :?

I make plenty of mockery of someone yielding such an instrument all the time.
I'm a lot more serious about people who wield them however.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

You know what's odd? I have a couple swords hanging up in my house in prominent places, one of which is a BFS. And yet none of the repair people who've visited in the past several months have mentioned them. Not one word. The electrician noticed the tiny little 4 inch mezuzah by my front door, but not the five foot claymore hanging in the living room.

That reminds me, my family recently changed our TV/Internet/Phone service to a different plan, to include a phone line for a good $60 or so less per month, somehow, and both the guys who came to install the new box said nothing about my swords, knives, or guns...but the figures and posters, well, apparently some of those are "a bit naughty."
Though the one fellow did knock over some of my mini-sword/letter-openers at one point, trying to manipulate the box into a better position for the multitude of cords going in and out, and commented that I'd booby-trapped him...

When you work at a job where you go into people's homes you see all sorts of weird things. After a while the attitude is to just hurry go in - get out. They're probably just happy you're not a nut case and they got out of there with all their limbs intact. Of course, I'm assuming you're not a nut case  Hoarders are the worst homes to go in: every room filled ceiling high with old, stinky boxes and newspapers, and you can only walk around a tight little path between junk, the house reeks of animal urine and feces, 50 cats and 5 dogs hanging around, and the person you're talking to hasn't bathed in two months - of course, the bathroom is being used as a storage space. Compared to that, a cool sword collection is a relief to see!

Oh, I can only imagine. Mother dearest enjoys watching those television shows. I can't really figure out why.

My experience is slightly different. When I was single and practicing Kung Fu all the guy friends loved checking out my weapons. Most of the girls were afraid to hold them. Nobody ever questioned me about them until I got married and started learning iaido and purchased an iaito. They would ask why would you buy a fake sword?
I have around 20 weapons but rotate them so never have more than 6 out at any time. I found that people find it more artistic looking than obsessive. I wonder if we could be invited to that "Dinner for Smucks"?

That's a good idea - to rotate a few at a time. I'll have to work on that one. I'm sure my wife will appreciate it too!

My wife enjoys those shows as well... I find them disturbing... like stopping by the highway to look at a bad wreak. I don't get it.

Comparison relief, perhaps? As in "thank god we're normal compared to them?"
