Worry not, I am well acquainted. I may only have one Valkyrie, and honestly I'm not all that sure which one it is, but my collection of frickin' dakimakura covers very nearly rivals my sword collection. One shelf of figures is probably worth more than every sharp thing I own. My current collection, including figures, pillow covers (dakimakura and square cushions both bundled into one group), printed towels, t-shirts, mugs, mini-notebooks, keyrings...anything else I can't think of right now, has me out about two to five or more high-end, custom swords, heck, maybe even a brand-new car or two...
"Robotech" was probably one of my first experiences with anime, and I'd found the idea of "transforming" airplanes, with an in-between mode, absolutely fascinating[/] as a young kid. When I grew up, and read about the original Macross series of...well, series, I was appalled at the very notion of what the did to "Robotech" and forced myself to watch the entirety of the original SDF Macross, but have been having difficulty in finding a reliable source detailing which series came next. I do have all of Mospeada, saved for later, but can't really force myself to be interested in the more recent 7 and Frontier...
It is somewhat unnerving when somebody goes out of the way to make light of something you're sincere about, but I'm also quite used to this, myself. My mother is very much the same way with just about all my hobbies, but I usually just shrug it off and go on to explain the "truth" of the matter, if anybody still cares.
Though if it were me, my "girlfriend" probably wouldn't be if she couldn't help but make jokes about any of my hobbies or personal interests. ...Might be why I'm single. >_>

unfortunately ,in england the only way you'll not be looked down upon for collecting/cutting with swords is if you wear a tweed suit and are a member of the academic community (military historian basically)other than that, you're character is pigeon holed into questionable at best, and down right freaky and morbid at worst i've always had an interest in swords/knives/archery (not so much guns anymore since they're being slowly kicked out) thats the main reason i left my gun club before i got my fac,i didnt want to work that hard to get a licence, buy my sharps .45 and rodgers and spencer revolver, only to have them taken away 5 years down the line my parents have always though id grow out of it,i've never been one of the follow fashion/football crowd(SHEEPLE),they tend to just annoy me, its interesting though how putting a sword in a sceptics hand can change they're opinion, this has happened a few times with me :? maybe the feel of a sharp well tempered sword has a deep rooted effect on our phsyce (funnily enough this effect does not happen with wall hangers) i'll continue my healthy interest in our sport ,which is a peacefull and to me soulful art, and quite frankly f"£$ what other people think

I've never encountered anything but positivity toward my hobby of sword collecting. Everyone who sees them wants to hold them and know more about them. Within my collection, my kids, their spouses, and all my grandkids each have a special sword that will be theirs when I'm gone. Two of my sons-in-law are now collecting their own swords. Local high schools have had me bring swords into the classroom to talk to their history students. The police have asked me to identify a sword used in a murder. The local Medieval club has had me come in and talk to them about swords. Credibility doesn't lie in the things that interest us. It lies in who we are. If we have personal credibility, then those around us will be positive toward our hobbies.

I discovered it the same way you did, through Robotech. Robotech basically crammed Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospedia together. Surprisingly, the wikipedia entry for Macross gets the chronologies mostly correct for it all. I have the original SDF Macross series on DVD and it is much better than Robotech. i didn't particularly care for Macross 7 myself. Macross Plus and Macross Zero were very good though. All this is reminding me I need to get a seperate insurance rider for my various collections. It's not like I could replace everything since a lot of it has been out of production for ages now.

One of these days I'll have seen them all.
Your point about insurance reminds me...I need to do the same. A couple years back at Otakon, in Baltimore, I was chatting with fellow while sitting in line waiting for the dealers room to open, and he'd shown me a youtube video he'd made, more a slideshow really, of his collection. He had so much stuff crammed into so many places, it was less impressive than it was confusing to look at. Sort of like picking the prettiest zebra on a safari. He then informed me that he had his collection insured for "about half a million" and my only reaction was to wonder why he bothers to insure something he'll never be able to buy again...but understanding that, in the worst case, at least he gets money.
I'm somewhere between dealing with the grief brought on by the loss, and the comfort of knowing I'll get some money back should anything happen to them...but I'm mostly banking on nothing happening that insurance would cover, anyway. My house is no target for theft, my location not prone to natural disasters, so I'm not so worried.
...Oh right, this was a thread about playing ninja. I'd have verbally berated the girlfriend before correcting her; I play SAMURAI, NOT NINJA.

By this logic then... because my closed minded neighbors are not positive towards my hobby, its because I lack personal credibility?

Being from West Virginia where everyone I lived around had guns and carried knives made collecting sharpies not a big deal. I left there and spent 25 years in the Army with more folks who loved guns and sharpies. Have not left that community yet as I now work as a civilian for Uncle Sugar. Will be funny when I finally settle down and live around "Normal People" and then see a reaction.
My wife is not real crazy about it. Does not think it is weird, but thinks the money could be better spent for what she likes!!

If your idea of owning a sword is to go in the backyard and make believe your tishiro mafune, while wearing a fuscia body suit, pink cape and yellow souwester boots then maybe you can get a room at the VA central state bugatorium over at Edge Hill.
If you can't differentiate between play, fantasy and reality then the same may apply.
If, on the other hand, you derive an aesthetic joy at the history, technology, and art that is manifested by this thing called "sword", you can simply IGNORE other opinions. ( At age 20 it's still hard to not worry if other people see you as constantly having your fly open. This too doth pass. )

Narrow minded folks will only ever approve of anything that lies within their realm of normal, credibility or not.

Like a lot of you here I also collect guns and for some reason if I drop $2500 on a custom revolver I get subdued positive response. If I drop $2500 on a custom sword, I get the "are you crazy look". That I dont understand.

I love going to raves. Man you think your hobbies are bad, try telling someone you like raves and 98% of the time they immediately think your some sort of junkie-scum-of-society. UNLESS its another person whom has attended one anytime in their life and found its not like that at all. There response is like oh wow thats cool! I use the words: 'Events' Festivals' 'Partys' and you see the response is so different its like your not even talking about the same thing anymore. Unless you have tryed something how can you have an understanding or even a opinion? Dodger couldn't have said it better,
Because swords are so different from the norm people dont like it...

But then, what is normal? Isn't being normal actually being different from you neighbor?

i havent read every post up to here so this is just my reply to the OP. Ive been made fun of for my swords numerous times, mostly by people who dont have a hobby in the first place and i always feel obliged to tell them that getting drunk doing drugs and screwing every cheap tramp you can see isnt a "hobby" and until you get a real one you have no business talking crap about mine.

For the most part everyone in my life is cool with my hobbies. My buddies sometimes give me flak for spending money on swords, but it's all good natured ribbing and when I bring 'em along they all demand their turn with 'em. Heck, the first time I brought down my H/T Longsword my buddy sat there all evening long cradling it, feeling the balance etc.
My girlfriend doesn't get my hobby, but then again she's got hobbies that I don't get either and we're both kinda OK with that. We've got enough in common outside of our hobbies to have a good, stable relationship.

I'm just now joining this coversation:
Short answer; I do martial arts YES I FEEL LIKE I'M LOOKED AT AS A JOKE.
Elaboration; Just yesterday I was practicing kata outside in the tennis court and on every side of me I hear obnoxious college boys yelling at me like Bruce Lee from a movie. I've practiced different types of fencing with my friends and am more commonly referred to as a Jedi more than anything else. Last I checked my sword wasn't glowing, sir. But you're welcome to take a closer look if you're not sure

I like MOK's answer.
Methinks people here take themselves and their hobbies too seriously.
Me its just a hobby. Some will understand some won't. I'm happy to share my hobby with those who understand and want to learn more. Those who do not understand can continue to scoff and make make comments. I don't care. Its their right to scoff. Its mine to continue to do what I want so long as I don't harm anyone.
Aside from that there's no reason to let anyone else's opinions bother you. If you do let them bother then its really your problem and not theirs.

I know I have weird hobbies. Even my most 'normal' hobby - riding horses - is weird to some people. Whatevs. It used to bother me in high school, but now I don't care.

Very true... which is why I gave up caring what such people thought of me a long time ago.
