A thought just crossed my mind-
How will Paul be able to bring his sword collection into Japan if/when he moves there? What of the laws- are they only for katana or what?

he has already stated that he has sold some of his personal collection to fund trips to visit his daughter. it is ilegal for him to take them to Japan so more than likely he will sell them, or give them to people. but whatever he does if he takes them with him he would be breaking the law of the country he is trying to live in and that is not a good way to be allowed to stay in country. Paul is no fool, I very much doubt he will take his swords with him. if it is too painful for him to get rid of all of them he may place them in storage, but this just doesn't seem practical to me.

I'm sorry, but if I had a daughter and someone told me that I needed to give up all of my current swords to be with her, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I'm just wondering if he'll offer any of his collection on SBG

thats why i prefer bokkens now hahaha sure you can't cut with them but at least you can train with them same thing for iaito.
it would be sad to part ways with his collection but objects can't be compared to a loving daughter i guess.

I would be paying close attention to the Classified Section of this forum.

He *might* be able to keep his Japanese swords if he gets a license to own them, but all the others would be automatically illegal. Even most of his Japanese swords might be disallowed if the authorities decide to closely inspect them to see how they were made.

There is no such thing as license to own sword per se. The document applies to the individual sword not the owner. Each sword has to have an accompanied NBTHK paper. Only true nihonto get NBTHK paper. Paul started out this site as a guide to inexpensive production swords. None of them are allowed in Japan. History of the paper: www.nihontocraft.com/japanese_sword_papers.html

Indeed... I love my swords... but if a family member or friend was in any sort of need, no possession no mater how much affection I have for it would even be a consideration when weighed against being there for them. On a slightly related note... another Shadowhowler huge sword sale is pending this weekend... I'm gathering funds for a gift for my wife, something she really wants and deserves... so alas, some swords must go. :-(
