did anyone catch this episode? I saw it last night and was pretty excited at first since they opened with the katana. as soon as the segment started though I knew it was yet another load of fairy tales and inaccuracies. I believe they claimed that the miraculous katana edge was so sharp and strong that it never needed to be sharpened.
it's such a shame that they can't get the facts straight because the filming and graphics are so wonderful it would have made a very fine piece of educational entertainment. it is clear why there are so many myths continuing to surround this sword.
my katana is so sharp it can cut through a tank and then without having taken any damage can proceed to cut right through nanoparticles!
I can't find the episode on the history channel or youtube but if someone can track it down feel free to post it here

I'm very tempted to sharpen my cheapish Musashi katana till it will slice paper. Then I shall attempt to slice through a copper pipe, and tell them, "No, it can't cut through metal you twats. Get a grip. It'll cut through flesh and bone, not tanks and concrete." Instant youtube flaming shall ensue.

I saw the epp... they covered a whole range of knives and tools with edges... pretty interesting actually. Its worth mentioning that the normal Katana hype was kept to a minimum in this one... aside from the 'never needs sharpening' bit they didn't really lay it on. In fact, you can make an argument that the never needs sharpening is true... as a traditional katana is not sharpened but polished.

are you a lawyer? without exposing the loopholes it was still a misleading comment I thought, at least the way they compared it to other blades that do get dull with use.
it was a good show for the most part, especially amazed by ceramic blades but I just wish they would stick to facts when mentioning the swords. it doesn't help discourage the never ending slew of youtube bobbleheads cutting everything from 2'x4's to tree trunks. I like the high quality production value of the series but it seems that we have to make a choice between these that lack the truth or details and low budget, hard to find shows and videos which are much more accurate. I guess the general public doesn't have the patience for most of the details just like my family and friends who start falling asleep if I mention more than "this is a katana, it is razor sharp and deadly"..............or maybe it's just me, lol I always like to keep my audience riveted!

Not to damper all of y'alls enthusiam here, but I have several kats from 5 to 10 years old... all still paper-cutting sharp, and never sharpened or polished... a couple of them have cut copper pipe...

10 years and still sharp is quite an accomplishment, but any way you look at it, this is still a long way short of never.
the mere idea of needing to even argue this topic is ridiculous. never means never and I have only rarely in my life run into anything that can be honestly described with the absolutes of never or always.
I'm sure Marc understands this and is not making such a claim but I had to say it.

Of course, Tom I realize 10 years is not the same as never... and never is a ridiculous word to use in ANY context , about ANYTHING.

I dunno about that... I feel sake in saying that you and I, Marc, shall NEVER engage in any sweet, sweet man loving... In principle, tho, I agree... like Justin Beiber says... never say never. :?
