Hey guys,
I was wondering if you guys could point me to some good Katanas. I have a budget of $300 although it's ok if it goes a little over that. I want a Katana with a real hamon, and no-hi. It also has to have decent fittings. Thanks.

Nothing really in particular. Just has to have a real hamon and no-hi. Anything from $0-300. Just name good kats in that price range if you could. I already know about the Cheness offerings so you need not mention those.

Munetoshi t10 line from Swordnarmory. Great looking- clean, vibrant hamon, and good scratch/bend-set resistance. Kris Cutlery. I keep hearing great things about them, especially their 5160 line, one of which is my next buy. They have a hamon, but it is very subtle. There's a whole slew of Hanwei sub $300 katanas from PaulChenHanweiSword.com. They all have a real hamon, it is there, but it is etched over to really bring it out.

Also, I can't forget to mention the SBG $330 Custom Katana, offered right here at this site. I don't know if they're accepting orders right now, but the have exactly what you want. This goes, of coarse, without saying because it is chosen piece by piece by you for you. Great looking, no-hi, with a vibrant hamon.
p.s. I want one badly.

Paul chen practical plus Elite (SH6001KPE)
I own one and it's an amzing blade. Beefy, no hi, well balanced, razor sharp and stays sharp. Ito and fittings are all very tight. Can take a ton of abuse and then laughs in your face and asks for more.

I've personally been looking long and hard at the Munetoshi Hand Forge Folded Samurai Katana Sword Katsu on the SwordnArmoury site. They've got one in a green theme for only $315. That's a lot of katana for 300 bucks.

Quick list off the top of my head: Musashi, Munetoshi, Kris Cutlery, and Hanwei all offer katana in that price range with hamon. Kris Cutlery may not have a no-hi model though; I don't really keep up with their work. Their swords are GREAT quality though. The only katana that I know from Cheness that has a real hamon, supposedly, is the Kaze; their swords are supposed to be good beaters though.
I would honestly not try the SBG Custom right now until you hear more notices about members getting theirs in short order. A few still have not received theirs despite being up in the first few orders, and there's at least a 3-month wait. If you have the patience for it, then that's good, but honestly I'm slightly leery of it. Some might offer a different opinion, I don't know.
The Hanwei Bamboo Mat has one of the best blades for its price; it's close to $400 though...

I'm REALLY interested in the kaze, but I dont like the black sageo with the brown tsuka-ito. Anyone know somewhere i can get sageo that matches the color well???

I have a Kaze and I love it. I got mine here from the SBG sword store. I paid about $20 less than going through the Cheness site. A few other places to look for sageo would be Yamato Budogu and Tozando. They both have a pretty good selection of several types of sageo.

yeah I just want to make sure it matches prefectly, which is hard seeing as i dont have a sword at hand to refernce the color, or the sageo at hand. I was thinking the stuff with the white checks in it. My musashi bamboo has white checks in its black sageo, which looks really nice, but i dont just want my collection to have that style. My hands are tied...haha...tied.....But please avert your laughter at my seemingly hiarious jokes... I was thinking of asking paul cheness if i could purchase just some of their brown ito for some extra money on the order, but i dont think i want to buy it directly from cheness.....ideas, help im hopeless wisconsins sword community is nearly non existant!!

I'm real happy with my SBG Custom that I got for $300. A little more expensive now though (it was nice to be in at the onset!) . Can be ordered as you like. Lots of options on ito and saya colors. I think it's only a little more now but there may be a hold on orders? Check with Paul.

Kris Cutlery 29 III@ Around $295 max. Good amount of niku. Good thick hamon. Curved/waisted Tsuba. Ultra durable.

I must say that Cheness is really behind the game on cost vs quality. There are so many MUCH better swords for a far better price.
