For a while now I've been toying with the idea of using stone to customize swords. At first I thought of a nice stone grip, but I think the pressure required to hold the grip in place would crack the stone (all stone is brittle). Then I thought of using it for pommel medallions. Jade would be nice, but again there may be a problem with brittleness. But how about on a scabbard? You could made some nice recesses in the leather with risers, carve some stone insets, and just glue them in place. Here's some pictures of a sculpture I've been working on that shows the type if stone I'm thinking of using. It's fairly hard (much more so than soapstone) and can be worked into pretty good detail. This thing is about two feet tall, but I'm thinking of pieces no more than a couple of inches. Will it just be hokey, or do you think it would look OK? Does anyone know of anyone else trying this?

I don't know of anyone else doing it, but I think it could look really sweet. I know this isn't stone, but for some reason I immediately thought of this recent Fletcher sword and the strap bridge when I read your post. Could be a jumping off point for design ideas:
