I think this sounds awesome, Dodger. (stellar work on that carving, by the way!) I don't know of anyone else doing it, but I think it could look really sweet. I know this isn't stone, but for some reason I immediately thought of this recent Fletcher sword and the strap bridge when I read your post. Just Brilliant Dodger what a great piece, any chance of a picture next to something like a soda can so to get a better idea of size.
