Alright another "vs" thread, I've narrowed down the choices for the newest additions to my collection... Malatesta is more visually appealing (mostly the scabbard and suspension system, the guards on both are about equal to me), and I like the suspension system a bit more, but the Krieg is a beast and I can't turn away from it. The main thing turning me off from the Krieg is the color of the belt attachments and leather. Is it oxblood, or brown? The malatesta comes in black, so that automatically is a +1 to me...
But I'm not buying on aesthetics, I want a good sword that would be comfortable for my large hands, it tough and flexible, and the best deal possible. If anyone has owned both of these in the past, I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out with a brief comparison.
Thanks, Mike

Ummm....why don't you just get the Kriegschwert attachments in black? Valiant Armoury does have a custom sword shoppe, you know, so the color shouldn't be a deciding factor. They've done it before (Granted this whole sword is black, but you get the idea): custom-sword-shoppe.com/forum/vi ... f=29&t=285

You know, Luna, it's weird; I normally like black, but the Krieg in black just looks... Weird.

Yeah, I saw that before. It's just the price, honestly. Not much of a difference, but enough of one that concerns me deeply...

The stock VA Krieg attachment straps are a dark brown, not oxblood. The scabbard on the Malatesta could be called oxblood.
As Luna pointed out, by ordering through the Valiant Custom Sword Shoppe, you can get either one in any color combination that you wish. Make it unique and truly your own.

Anyway, to more properly address the OP's questions: the belt attachments on the Krieg are brown, but you could order them black as stated above (*edit* yep, chuck addressed it well).
I haven't owned these two swords, but I know forumite Dave Kelly does, perhaps some others (I believe Chuckinohio has both)? Dave had this to say about comparing the Malatesta and Krieg on a review of the former, with a comparison photo:
You can see a size comparison in that Photo--the Malatesta has a less robust blade, a longer hilt, and is lighter overall--making it a very fast bastard sword that lacks some of the power of the Krieg warsword.
I myself prefer the hilt and scabbard of the Malatesta, but the blade type feels incongrous to me, so I prefer the cohesive design of the Kriegschwert overall. The Malatesta blade seems too short for my tastes, and I'd like it to taper more aggressively (Like the Landgraf, second from bottom), whereas the Krieg seems to 'fit together' better to my eyes.
Both are superb swords, it just depends on what attributes you'd rather have in your blade. You can't go wrong between these two.

I do own both, and I concur with Lunamans asessment on their attributes. Spot on.
The Malatesta is a finesse blade, the Krieg is the get it over with right now blade.

Hey Mike: Both swords have hand and a half grips so you'll have no problem handling them. The Malatesta has a 33 inch blade if I recall aright. Sort of a slightly longish side sword. Very fast sword. The Kreig is a 35 incher with some weight to it. Still a general purpose fighter with decent maneuverability, but lighter than a war sword. It's still my favorite of the Signatures. I also have the Templar which is a bit more stolid than the Kreig. A passing note: the VA Elite XVIII has the Malatesta fittings and a true two hand grip with a beautiful XVIII blade. It's a bit pricey at $900, but Sonny will color it the way you want and it is a BODACIOUS sword

Alright, thanks for all the info guys. I'll look into the "custom" Krieg... Yeah, I'll agree that the Malatesta doesn't flow nearly as well as the Krieg. And I'd prefer a "get it over with right now" kind of blade.
Dave: That gives me some reassurance. The only reason I was worried about the grip is because I don't like it when the risers dig into my palm... Also, what's your opinion on the 15th century Longsword? Looks interesting...
I also think the Kriegschwert looks a bit more professional. The Malt's beautiful, but The Krieg has definitely won in my book.

What do you guys think of a nice oxblood scabbard, with a black suspension system and grip? Hmm...

I think it's particularly interesting that you're in a dilemma between two VA swords. I think that's a testimony to the tremendous aesthetics and quality of these lines. I'll bet if you flipped a coin, VA wouldn't mind which one you went with.

I'd say that it would look A-OK, more important is what you think it would look like.
If you want it with a pink grip and a tiger striped scabbard, then go for it. It's all about what you want to wind up with.

Personally I'd go with a pink tiger-striped grip. The scabbard would just look gaudy, man.
Oxblood and black could look really good, IMO I think the black might be too dark unless you ask Sonny do do a really dark oxblood. I've seen it come out really bright red on occasion. A light brown or campaign tan might be a better contrast to the oxblood. Again, just my opinion. Whatever color you get...post pics and a review! There aren't too many reviews on the signature swords, most people see that it's been done and I guess don't feel the need to review it. But it's always helpful to get more opinions on these pieces.

Your hands acclimatize to what your tool is. However, in my case, I started out as a fencer: I pic up a sword, I wear gauntlets. For its price point the Windlass 15th is a very nice bastard sword. It really doesn't have the historical weight and length of a longsword. Blade will take a nice edge and cut. Windlass's penchant for light, diamond blades sometimes works against them, but the ones of bought and kept, I like. Don't forget to pay a visit to VA custom sword shop. There actually are several optional buys for the same price point as the Kreig. Enjoy. Do let us know what you get finally and how you like.

When I come up with the money, you can definitely expect a review.
