Hey guys, I had a few bottles just begging to be slain today, so I felt obligated to indulge them. I opted to use my shiny new H/T Fullered Bastard sword, sharpened by none other than VA's CSS. There are a few disastrously-horrible cuts, but despite my failures, the sword's cutting ability is showcased rather decently, if I do say so myself. All in all, I think Sonny & crew can put an edge on a blade pretty well!  Thanks for watching... feel free to like/comment. All the best, -Slayer

Some great cuts in there... especially liked the early one on the milk carton... ...but I see we still can't get ya to stop with that pointless sword twirling and flipping eh?

nice vid and cuts. your skills had that first bottle running from you as i noticed when you put it on the stand, it jumped of yelling it native bottle tongue, "hell no you aint cuttin my arse!".
i enjoy some fancy hand work on my swords from time to time... practicing my agility and dexterity, however, the guys are right.... especially the drop catch.... it is dangerous. if you remember my post on the old forum about the stitches to my ankle when my ikazuchi slipped from its sheath when i was leaning forward without mu finger crossing the guard for safety, and it felt like a feather touched me but i had an arterial bleed. thank God for smaller arteries and medical training.
needless to say, especially with that drop catch, with the tip aimed at the ten little piggies, we are rightfully concerned. we all do crazy things from time to time, just dont let one of them be buying car insurance that cost too much...

Haha, thanks guys... and yeah, I know, I'm working on it. I certainly toned it down since last time, eh? It's just natural for me, I guess. I've always been pretty dexterious, and when one hand is holding a bottle and I want to change grips on the sword, I just do it automatically. That being said, I assure you that I'm not TRYING to show off.  ...and yes, buying overpriced insurance WOULD be terrifying! P.S. I just noticed... I SUCK at thrusting!  Does anyone have tips or drills for improving this skill? :?: -Slayer

You want tips for thrusting huh slayer??? :? ...It's all in the hips! (no vid tutorials necessary or wanted  ) dirty jokes aside, And accuracy aside, you'd probably still go through any chainmail and leather. I'm just putting out the suggestion that you seem to weigh less than most (yes I'm envious) and would carry less momentum behind your blade. I'm not telling you to go gain some weight (God FORBID) but to thrust forward a bit faster and lean in a bit more.

You were also thrusting against a friggin' apple sauce container (from the looks of it), those things are made of HARD plastic. You did pretty good against the regular bottles, maybe you aren't applying enough force to the thicker plastic.

Ghost- Haha! Nice one. Yeah, It probably would go through light targets like people easily. I weigh 125, so I definitely don't throw much weight around, but I can put a LOT more 'oomph' behind a STAB than I was in the video. I sacrificed power for accuracy, and ended up with a mildly-accurate-and-yet-super-weak thrust that didn't work very well at all. Hence my request. Basically, my thought is that I need to work on accuracy, and then add power as my skill increases. Aaron- Indeed, that thing was THICK! However, it happened to be a salsa container, though that is niether here nor there. Your observation is spot-on, but I am worried that if I used more force, I would hit off center or miss entirely. So, do either of you have tips for accuracy, per chance? :?: Thanks! -Slayer

Like any skill, it takes practice. I'd use smaller bottles though since it's a much tighter target mass.

I'm going to elaborate a little on what JP said.
You'll hear this in about any martial art, "do not try to hit your target, try to hit behind your target."
When you thrust, you are just poking the bottle. Next time, try poking behind the bottle. I really don't think your weight has anything to do with it. I've seen vids of people twice your size who thrust the same way.
As for accuracy, yep, just practice.
"But guys," you may ask, "I don't want to use up all of my bottles just with thrusts!"
No worries! I forget which forum member used to do this, but he'd string up some tennish balls, and work on thrusting at them. I think he'd line up 3 or 4 all in a row and thrust at each one down the line. After you get started, they start moving, so it increases the difficulty.
What I like to do, because it's a little more destructive, is I've got a piece of lattice, and I tape a newspaper behind it. I then try and stab each of the diamonds in one row. It's suspended with some rope, so if I miss and hit the lattice, it just swings. Granted, this isn't the best thing to keep your tip sharp, but I have the means to sharpen my own tips.
All in all, I'm glad your still around. But have you hit a growth spurt or something? I swear you look a few years older then when I watched your vids last year.

Well, he is about that age....I went from 5'8" to 6'1" in just over 2 months when I hit my growth spurt at 14. Slayer's a bit older than that but still right around that growing stage. I thought he looked a bit taller, too.

Some nice cutting, it sucks that you cut better than me and I'm so much older than you. It seems my years ought to count for something Seriously, thanks for posting the video, good stuff.

WOW! That was... explosive. Y'know, you leave these posts alone for 5 minutes, and they start multiplying like Midori's Pink Katana Couple. Aaron- Good idea... I had been taking it easy on myself and starting with something larger, but you have a point; if I push myself to be bette,r I'll probably get there. JP- Not a bad point at all... I've seen the thrusting motion fencers use. Do you think that works with 'real' swords too? :?: Greg- Brilliant as usual, man! Got it; there is no bottle.... there is only the ninja hiding BEHIND the bottle.... KILL THE NINJA!!!! I'll also have to try the tennis ball thing; it sounds useful, thanks. As for hitting a growth spurt... I'm not sure, maybe? I honestly haven't paid attention. I'm not even quite sure how tall I am anymore! I sure have been changing a lot over the last year or two, though, so who knows, you could be onto something there. Bill- Thanks, man! I appreciate it! But don't worry; at least you have the advantages of wisdom and experience, right? I've never decieved myself that youth and vigor cannot be overcome by age and skill... guys like you are pretty smart! I'm on your side, if this Zombie Apocolypse thing ever happens. lol I'm glad you enjoyed it... could you post a link to one of your cutting vids? I honestly don't think I've seen your bottle-beheading brilliance.  Thanks for all the replies and tips, keep 'em coming, friends! -Slayer

"Real" sword??? Just what do you mean by that Slayer...? Do my A&A German Rapier and I have to make a trip down to Florida and have a conversation with you, Hmmm?

Uh-oh.... Naaa! I didn't mean it like that, lol. Your A&A German Rapier is not only a 'REAL' sword, but a VERY nice one... that I'm quite envious of, darnit. I meant in comparison to foils and such, which are what, 6oz? Although... a cutting session with you would be a lot of fun, as long as it was *ME* that we were cutting... so perhaps I should maintain a masquerade of being a rapier-basher until you get here, and then be like, 'Whoa, we're surrounded by bottles! ...Great, that simplifies the problem of getting to them and spilling their watery-guts out! Go stab to your heart's content, bro!' No worries, no slight intended to fencers or their blades intended, as long as they know the difference between a combat SPORT and a combat ART. Which I'm sure you do, and I bet you're proficient in both, lol. -Slayer

I think he means the twidly light foils we use.
Yes, it works very well with medieval swords, though point control is more of an issue.
Here's a video of whenever I was doing a review on a dagger. Check the thrust at the end, though very poor technique, that's the idea. Works well with longswords, bastards, and I've done it with a scimitar at a time, though that required changes in technique.
Another thing, sometimes in sports fencing, they teach you to move your wrist up, for a few reasons. It looks pretty, and well, there's less chance of hurting the other person. The problem with that is that is redirects the force from the straight thrust into the lateral motion of the wrist moving up.
I should finish sharpening and post some vids heh.

Makes sense... thanks. So, thrust like a fencer, but without the wrist-thing... got it. Nice video, btw. -Slayer

Another little finicky detail. Don't try to thrust through too heavy targets with a hand and half while using only one hand. It becomes too easy to have the point glance off.
Personally, I keep one hand on the pommel, and thrust from the plow guard. You should be fine with arming swords and the like.
Gah, I need to get out cutting again, haven't been able to since the onset of the Canadian winter.
