The main thing I don't like about it is how the angles where the blade starts going pointy kind of flare out from the otherwise parallel edges. We know CS can do a curved edge just fine (see Kukri machetes), so why not either just do a Pompeii style gladius, or if they want curves, make it a Mainz or Fulham? Could even just keep the same grip assembly...

I don't see the point of a gladius machete. If I need a machete, I'll get a machete. It may make a good tactical type gladius tho. The price is right but I'm wondering how thick the blade is. Weight says 18 ounces, that seems kinda light. I await better pics and more info.

My main concern is that it will lack the weight distribution to length ratio to really cut things. Granted, there's no need for a machete anymore in my neck of the woods, but still.

Assuming it's the same thickness as all their other machete's it would be just a hair under 1/8th of an inch.
My theory on the flaring is that it adds a bit more weight towards the front of the blade which, obviously, is necessary for a functional machete. What with the blades being so thin and all. I'll probably give it a shot once they're out on the market.

This is correct. I just saw it on Cold Steel's website; the dot is indeed a lanyard hole.

I don't like it and while I have nothing against their products I'm not a fan of their puffery regarding said products. That being said a gladius style blade would most likely not be too effective as a machete. Now on the other hand if you just wanted a cheap gladius style blade then its another issue - even at full MSRP its a very inexpensively priced gladius type sword/blade etc. It might be considered a must have for gladius lovers - something cheap enough and ugly enough that you can ruin it without concern but still a gladius (of sorts) and probably quite functional for the kind of things you would use a gladius for.

Well, this is a machete we're talking about. The cross-section is kinda inherent to what machetes are and how they're made (ie. dirt cheap tools simply stamped or cut out of sheet metal and sharpened along one or more edges).

I spoke to someone at cold steel and they said this should ship in June.
Do you have to keep a blade like this oiled?

Not necessarily with the black baked on finish, no. It seems to do the job of rust prevention just fine on its own under any halfway reasonable conditions. If you remove the finish (and I wouldn't blame ya, it's butt ugly) then the blade is bare high carbon steel and yes, will rust unless properly maintained. Remember, a very light coat of oil suffices - most of the time just cleaning the blade and wiping it down with an oily rag (if you own non-stainless steel blades, you will have one lying around before long ) when you put it away is quite enough. Of course, sharpening the edges removes the coating from them, so there's that. Anyway, keeping a blade lightly oiled when not in use never hurts.

I hear some people don't like the handle. Why is that? Looks fine to me.

I think it looks good all round, I hope the lanyard hole is where the rivet is for good retention. Yeah I would of easilly taken it more Pompeii profile. I would of taken it as a single silloutetted piece and the handle just being a couple of slabs but the handle is okay I suppose.
Overall for the price its a nice cheap tactical blade, buy it and if it doesnt rock your world or seems ineffective as a tactical sword (its thin but it MIGHT be thick enough) then you can just use it as a garden/woods tool you can thrash
