That actually looks like an excellent plan. Especially seeing as the Narsil/Anduril blade is so long on a decent replica anyway-- it's around 40" if I recall correctly, might even be 45"? Yes, most replicas have the blade as 36" but that's just not right given the scaling from various pictures...
Anyway, that long of a blade is going to have some crazy leverage when it comes to the tang, so you can't just cut one-handed with it-- you have to grip the metal part of the hilt, the long pommel bit. And if there's only a short screw on that... bad news. So I think a long screw would really work better, as in your design.
The only problem I can see is that the part you have designated as a spacer is a part of that long pommel; the fluting on that pommel ends *on* it, and you don't necessarily want to see a line going around it where they meet. I'm sure it could be covered up by nice work though... perhaps weld them together after, and polish it out, do the grip as a wood sandwich rather than sliding it onto the tang?

Yeah the blade is just under 41" on the custom pieces that Peter Lyon made. I know that the spacer is a part of the pommel but the seam should be inconspicuous if it's put together right. And yes, the grip would be sandwiched on last, similar to how Albion and historical swords are done.
