I've been looking at the functional production daos available at present and Kris Cutlery's Folded Steel Dao has caught my eye: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Steel+Dao I've checked out Kris Cutlery's reputation, which seems satisfactory, but I haven't been able to find anything in writing about whether this particular blade has been heat treated and what the quality of that treatment might be. My next step will be to go pester someone at the company for the information, but I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed the answer somewhere obvious. For reference, the attraction for me is primarily in the relative plainness of the fittings coupled with the seemingly high quality in other regards. Most of the high quality daos I've seen look very gaudy to me and tend to be even more expensive. I'd love to see what the Rodell designed dao might look like before settling on anything else, but I haven't heard anything new about that in a long time. Thanks for any insight,

Thanks Crimsoned. I would be very tempted to go with the Dao IV. It's to bad it was a limited edition. I haven't seen any for sale when I've searched. Though I am surprised that someone would compare the Dao IV with the Folded Steel without reservation. Their stats on Kult of Athena look very different: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... ery+Dao+IV I've thought about going with Jin-Shi. Garret has a great reputation, but I'm still more than a little leery of buying something I haven't seen before hand, even if it's the highest quality and I gave the specs.

this info is found in the KC FAQ section
"Is the blade hardened or tempered?
Single edge swords or dagger are hardened on the edge only. The edge of the blade is heated red hot at about 1500 deg. F and quenched in water. This gives a hard edge of 60 RC (a file is 64 RC & most pocket knives are 55 RC). This tempered edge is called the ”hamon“ on the Japanese blades. The upper part of the blade is soft and has a hardness of 30-40 RC. The hamon is difficult to see and is rather faint but can be brought out by acid etch or some type of polishing. This process is one of the most difficult in Japanese sword style production. With the 5160 steel, about 20% ends up with a crack hamon. However, with the 1060 steel it is much more forgiving in the tempering process. Using oil for hardening/tempering is easier but the temperline is not as "nice". We only use water.
Double edge swords and daggers like the Gims and Medieval long swords are hardened to 60 RC and then tempered to about 55 RC. The blade can then be flexed to about 15 deg. without damaging the blade. Anything beyond might cause the blade to stay bent. The short double edge swords are tempered using the same procedure as above (single edge swords)."

Sensorium: I've been wanting a Dao myself... and am sad that Kris Cutlery's plainer but more affordable Dao are all gone for the moment. The folded still Dao is heat treated... but I can't speak to the durability or quality of the folded steel swords... only the 5160 steel swords that come from their main forge in the Philippines. I've owned a few different swords from there... and they were all of very good quality. Getting the folded steel Dao from KoA may be a good way to go... because of their very friendly 45 return policy.

Feel free to email Cecil at Kris. He's very responsive to his customers. I bought a Jian that was steeply reduced in price and when he went to ship it he found some rust spots that he cleaned up but he emailed and called me about them. He offered me another discount on top of the previous reduction or if I didn't want it free shipping on another sword for my trouble.

Thanks everyone, particularly Frankthebunny. That is the kind of detail I missed. I didn't think that information would end up in a FAQ.
