Anyone who knows me or has seen me around the forums knows that I am a sword guy, specifically japanese styled. Anytime I went camping or hiking the knives I took were pretty cheap and for the most part got the job done. I have had CRKT's bucks and no name brands picked up from the flea market. The reasoning behind it for me was that if I broke, misplaced or otherwise ruined these blades I wouldn't feel bad.
In all this time I have failed to lose or ruin any of these blades. However, I have been known to cuss at the poor edge retention and less than acceptable construction of some of my knives. So, with my friend calling me names and laughing at me, I gave into peer pressure and went out in search of a good all around blade that is a little more in line with my reputation in the sharp and pointy world.
After doing some research and reading reviews, analyzing cost and value, I finally settled on one knife.
Swamp Rat Knife Works, an offshoot of the well respected Busse Knife Group, produced this blade called the Ratmandu or RMD. It is made from SR-101 which is 52-100 carbon steel with a proprietary heat treatment. As I understand it, SR-101 is a ball bearing steel.
I haven't had an opportunity to use it as it just arrived today, however I will be writing a full review soon. But, I can say say after holding it that it's very well balanced and has a heft to it that will surely lend to its reputation as a powerful cutter.
Don't know if anyone here has owned this brand of knife, but feel free to jack my thread if you wanna give some personal experience info.
