Probably won't post here very often, but thought I'd start a thread for designs I come up with. First off the quick sketch of the sword staff I was asking questions about over in the customization forum: Not to perfect scale, mind you, just a visual reference so that you all can get an idea of what's in my head. Maybe I can talk Luna into redoing it for me he's good at taking a vision of mine and making it look super cool I'll start updating this post as I add images

Oooh, very nice, Wes. I like the quillions better than what I came up with on mine. I also like the way you did the leaf shape; not too pronounced, but still very... Leafy.

Huh... I'm VERY interested in seeing this masterpiece of epicness from you, man, but... well, it looks like a great big 'X' to me! Is that my problem, or your problem? :?: -Slayer

Looks fine on my screen? And Vincent can see it too, so maybe just you? lol
Although I have had some issues with my website lately I'd say just try refreshing in a bit.

Ah, it works now. Must've just been down for a sec when I clicked on the thread the 1st time... at any rate- AWESOME! I likey. Except for the pattarn welded blade, I love every feature about this weapon. I simply prefer the lower cost and slight extra strength of a non folded/whatever blade. Maybe you could talk to some companies and see if any of them would be willing to make this thing? I'd buy one if it were well made and under $500, for sure. I've wanted a sword-staff for years, as a result of the simple fact that my two best weapons are, you guessed it, the sword and the staff. Although, theoretically speaking, a double sided hewing spear would be almost as good. You know, like the Windlass Viking Hewing Spear, but with a spearhead on either end of the staff... oh, and with some sort of guard-like protrusion. At any rate, sorry for getting off topic, lol. Great design! I can't wait to see it realized in steel. -Slayer

I like it, the waisted hilt (are we calling it a tsuka since its wraped in ito?) is a particularly nice touch. I would say go with a full tang extending to the pommel if you can.
I tried that once....I don't recommend it, unless eviscerating yourself sound like fun.

You know... I think you're right. I bet I could use it, but it'd be just like when I use escrima sticks or dual wield one handed swords. I can do it, sure, but I have to focus so much on the weapons that I couldn't possibly use it effectively in combat. Sure would be cool, though. On that note, yeah, I vote for the sword staff... though I'd want it to be a bit longer, I just realized that yours is 50" long. I'd want 3/5ths staff, 2/5ths blade, I think, with an OAL of 60ish". -Slayer

Many many moons ago when I studied Jujitsu they also had a kobudo class that we trained in occasionally. The sensei had a lot of different lengths and shapes of bo and jo and he said to pick one that felt most comfortable in hand and train with it. The 5' staff seemed to feel better to me than the 6', and even though it's been so many years that I've lost most of what I learned in there I think I will still feel more comfortable with the shorter staff.

5' feels better to me as well... which is why I'd want it 60" rather than a huge 72". I wouldn't mind 65" though. -Slayer

how about something heavy and pommel-like on the end Wes? 50" with such a top heavy blade might cause some discomfort to have to grip it high up on the haft. I think this would help bring the pob back down. Maybe a triple spike or fleur-de-lis on the spear butt/tang? I'm not into the skull things that much... You could still inset the amber/gem etc. and I think it would have much better dynamics at the same time. Or perhaps a few rings (strider/ranger sword) spaced out closer to the base of the spear? That way flipping the spear around in your hands, you could hook behind the knees or use it in a mace-like way. I keep thinking of greek spears and butt caps, though I guess you won't have to worry as much about a snapped spear with a full tang build Looks so beautiful... if I am looking at it right, is that a battle wrap with exposed rayskin on either ends?

I would work with the smith to figure out what the best way to set up the sword would be to get the POB as close to that brass spacer as possible I was just doing the arrow point pommel to give it something for the drawing that design element is in no way set in stone atm. Yeah the grip wrap will be a japanese style battle wrap with about 6" of diamonds on either end of the handle. Glad you like the concept

Yo Wes, that is an amazing design! When I watched the vid in the other post, I was intreagued with the lethal potential of a real life sword staff - like an assegai or fixed bayonet - only way better cause its got a sword!!! This needs to get made!

I actually came up with this one about the same time as the swordstaff, don't know why I didn't throw it up there. I've always been fond of sickles and crescent moon shapes in general. I've seen smaller crescent knives, but never a sword

I Like the sickle sword, I have an antique sickle in my collection. I am very tempted to buy a cheap 300 wall-hanger, strip it and use the guards and handle to make it a reality.

Yeah I don't really care much for the African sword there. The appeal of the design like mine and similar swords is the crescent moon shape. So much symbolism and mystique with that shape. I would like to have the metal pitted and unpolished to resemble the lunar surface with silver guard and pommel. I think it would look really cool.

The African sickle, while probably useful and designed for a purpose, is just not doing it for me.
Wes's sickle on the other hand, now that looks like something the Captain of Hells army would be harvesting souls with.
Several types of wicked.
