Here's a new project I'm toying with, a fantasy scimitar with a finger ring. I'm not sold on the pommel, but I'm at a loss of how to finish it. Any suggestions?

I like it, but I agree; there's something off about the pommel. Perhaps something like a talon or a Chinese dao pommel? Although, I think either might look too out of place, as well.

Here I found this bronze sword a while back, I like the look of it. Maybe use it as inspiration?

I'm back with a new design idea. This one is an initial sketch that I'm working with Brendan on to bring to life. I'm calling it Nightraven - Sword of thieves. The design isn't final, but it contains elements I want in the final piece. A finger-ring, a relatively short blade to handle ratio (Much like the original Atlantean), abstract avian-looking crossguard (which I borrowed this current design from one of Lunaman's swords, modified slightly) And some place on the pommel to hang a raven feather and a crescent moon pendant. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions all welcome as this is a design in progress! Current specs are: Overall Length 38" tip of pommel to base of guard 10" base of guard to tip of blade 28" Long ricasso length 8" short ricasso length 6" guard width 6" blade width at widest point (flare tip to flare tip) 2" All furniture is to be heat darkened and blade will be gunblued.

Humana humana humana. That's amazing, Wes. Though the angled ricasso makes me think that would be stunning with a curved blade (at least, to me, that is). Mind if I tinker with it to see? By the way, here's something you might like; a render of your swordstaff (minus the tsukamaki, since I couldn't figure out how to do it when I rendered it).

Ha! That's pretty cool. Still would like to see it get made some day Sure, tinker with the design all you want. I know I want it straight-bladed though, I just like the asymetrical aspect of it. That way, if I'm fighting someone with OCD they're too distracted and frustrated by my blade aesthetics to focus on the fight. See. Thinking ahead.

Glad you like it. It was actually my most complex piece until I did a fully mounted chidori jumonji yari.
 I happen to be OCD, so those things are kinda distracting me, too.

I like that quasi atlantean, but I say keep the blade relatively straight, if not totally straight. I always wondered why not many people who love atlanteans have commissioned completely original designs based in the looks from the movie.

Yep. The Atlantean was one of several sword that were inspiration for this piece. I've always loved the Atlantean's overall dimensions, but found it too huge for myself to swing around comfortably. This is an attempt to remain true to the spirit of that sword while keeping it lively and quick in my hands.

I can't even get close to this in Inkscape (I tried, it was an embarasment).. And I can't draw by hand for anything. Have you given any thoughts to a langet down the back edge? Could help with that OCD factor, and has some interesting aesthetic options..

I like this design alot! Everything about it piques my interest,.......except the feather and pendant. For me i would prefer the feather and pendant dangling (if they must dangle) from the scabbard. Aside from imparting a chinese feel for me, i'd also not want the chain/cord to interfere with unsheathing. Too much to get tangled in a coat,on a belt, dagger etc.etc.etc. If it were mine, If on the scabbard, the cord/chain could be shorter/tighter to the scabbard, and the charm could be used somewhat like a bolo tie around your feather(s). Aside from that, i am liking this design alot!! I love the asymetrical approach, the blade looks to have a lust for blood.

Langets would be nice, but I'm considering the limitations of my chosen smith. I don't want to do the fittings in bronze for several aesthetic reasons and that would really be the only cost-effective way to do the langets I believe.
The scabbard is going to be an integrated system and with the long handle I don't anticipate having problems drawing the sword. I kept the chains short for this reason. I understand your reasoning though. I just like swords with little flourishes like that.

Nightraven Redux I approached the sword at a different angle keeping a few of the basics of what I really wanted to see in the sword which is the blade to handle ratio, the finger ring, and the pommel that I can attach my dangly things from and I came up with this. I like it much better. So much better that I took my sketch into photoshop and played around with coloring it lol.

That is awesome, Wes. I love the angled pommel, love the shape of the finger ring, and I absolutely love two-handers with a single-handed d-guard.

Thanks, Vincent. Do you ever sleep? XD In case you were wondering why I colored the guard and pommel the way I did I tried to replicate this patina in photoshop. The fittings will all be done like the ones on this dagger: www.fableblades.com/Hirl_i_Gilith.html

that is badass!, the only thing id change, is to make it either a leaf blade, or make the ricasso thingy a bit more defined. I ove what youve done with the handle...thats amazing

Thanks, Saito. I thought about going with a leaf blade or doing another long ricasso like in the previous version, but the straight, untapered blade spoke to me while I was drawing this one out.
Now I just have to wait 3 or 4 months til Brenno's backlog clears up lol.

Really great work... I may end up poking your brain for ideas on a project a few members are helping me with here. You seem to hae a good grasp of making something feel like the Conan Atlantean stuff without being a remake/rehash.
