My brother has a UC sword (first generation) which is a repclica of "Sting" from Lord of the Rings. He bought it right when these came out. "UC-1264 Taiwan" is stamped on the blade. It's a very sturdy sword- I've held it. He's wondering if it can be safely used to cut. Does anyone have this or know about it.
Thanks.

No do not let him cut with it. All the UC LotR licensed swords are stainless steel. In addition to being over a foot long (chance for chromium stress fracture), I do not believe it has a "full" tang. My own UC Anduril licensed blade does not have a tang and is indeed held by only one pin. These SLOs should not be sharpened at all. edit: found it for you. btw Kult of Athena still has 2 DSA's Sting(s) I believe (battle-worthy) www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=DSA1317Lord of the Rings Swords: Sting Swords Price: $119.99 UC1264 Sting Swords Lord of the Rings Swords: Sting Swords UC1264 Sting Sword is a sword given to Frodo Baggins by his cousin Bilbo, the original Ring bearer. It is up to Frodo and the chosen" Fellowship" to cast the Ring back into the fires of Mount Doom, where it was originally forged, and destroy it once and for all. Bilbo gives Sting, a sword made by Elves in the ancient days, to Frodo to serve him on his harrowing journey. Bilbo carried Sting with him when he originally acquired the Ring from Gollum. Sting's blade glows when Orcs, the violent foot soldiers of Sauron, are present. Engraved on the blade and cross guard are runes in the Elven language of Sindarin that say "Maegnas is my name, I am the spider's bane." Overall Length: 22" Blade Length: 15" Blade Thickness: 1/4" Blade Material: Tempered 420 J2 stainless steel. Handle Material: Hardwood handgrip adorned with Elven vine design. Solid metal guard and pommel with antiqued metal finish. Rat-tail tang construction. Includes wall plaque. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Your Price: $119.99 www.lordoftheringswords.com/stingsword.htmlThis means one solid whack with the sword can cause the sword to shatter at the hilt.

Actually, UC did make some Carbon Steel Stings... they came with a display box and had a bunch of info engraved right into the blade... which is what kept me from buying one. Ruined a otherwise beautiful sword.

Brenno's Sting was much prettier anyways. Shame on you for selling it (to someone other than me), Sean

I bought my mom the museum collection UC Sting a couple christmases ago... it's as close to the Weta workshop prop as can be; the only problem with it (other than the writing on the blade) is that the guard and pommel are more decorative than they are functional; being a silver-plated alloy. Still, it's it's a marvelous and reasonably functional replica of the movie sword, that conveniently perfectly fits in the scabbard that came with the stainless version! www.bladecenter.com/UC1424-sting ... GoogleBase It seems they are somewhat rare nowadays.

Yup, thats the one... beautiful sword... but for me they KILLED it with all the 'limited eddition' engraving they did on the blade itself. It that was on the box only and not the blade, I woulda got one.
