So, I was staring dreamingly at the Valiant Warder sword at KoA, longing for the day I could afford one, when I noticed that the hilt lenght was listed as only six and a half inch. "The heck?" I thought. "As in 16.5 cm? Surely that can't be right! Isn't this is supposed to be a two-handed sword?" Taking another look at all the other Valiant swords with similar proportions, as well as equivalents from other makers like Hanwei,Windlass and Albion, I found that the average grip lenght seems to be 7". Now, I can fit both my hands on a seven inch grip, but then we're talking the bare minimum. Six and a half means I'd have to either grip around the pommel somewhat or loop my index finger over the guard. I don't know, is it just me who happens to have larger then normal hands? I find that for a single handed grip, 4 inches fits my hand fairly snuggly, meaning both my hands requires pretty much exactly 8 inches. I always kinda thought that was normal.

grip should be 7" custom-sword-shoppe.com/forum/vi ... ?f=4&t=315 ...though it may slightly vary from sword to sword. If you check Sonny's Custom Sword Shoppe, it looks like they are redesigning the Warder with John Lundemo (I can't wait ) so there has been a price drop on the remaining ones. I feel you - I have big hands as well and 7" is a snug fit so I would like to see 7.5-8" as well.

I just measured mine, and the grip on my Warder is exactly 7 inches long. That is the actual leather covered wooden core, not counting any pommel.
It is not overly crowded, but it is not roomy. With a two handed grip, both of my hands are right together on the grip, but it is still comfortable for me.

The way you hold those swords in two hands isn't that you stick both hands on the handle, it's that you have your first hand on the handle and the second around the pommel with just your thumb and pointing finger on the hilt.

Ya even my new DSA FoA which is a true 2 hander is 7". Can barely fit two hands on it. Haven't had good enough weather to cut with it yet so I don't know if hooking the index finger will be better or not.

I have the same issue with most swords. Most hand and a half swords I have to use one handed and most two handed swords are a bit snug for me. I basically need 8.5" to 9" for it to be halfway comfortable for me.
the one good thing is that those axe handled hanwei tsukas that some people have issues with fit my hands almost perfectly, lol.

Nope, not just you... I have big meatpaws as well. On a two handed sword I need a minimum of 7 & 1/2 inch grip to be comfortable... tho 8 is much better. I have sold/traded several swords that I liked from VA's 304S to Albions Baron because the grips only had 7 inches and it was uncomfortable for me. Which was a shame... loved the swords but needed more room.

That is one crazy looking sword--like a katana with Western fittings. So you'd use it like a bastard, or what?
Anyway I don't have any two handed swords but I tried gripping a yardstick just now and it looks like 7 inches would just barely be enough if both are fully on the grip.

Same with me. I always thought that my cookie grabbers were large, but some of you lads must have skillets hanging off your arms
I've always been a bit hesitant to exert too much force on the pommel, but examining my "technique" I am doing almost exactly what Cold Napalm suggested with the exception that the pommel rides deeper in my palm.

Well, nice to hear it's not just me, then. Really? Any idea what kind of redesign are we looking at? Aw, but I hate having to do that.

Hi we were thinking of a plainer S shaped guard and onion pommel. Haven't gotten to the new design yet. By the way the Warder is not a true two hander but a bastard euro styled hilt made for one hand and a half meaning, a full hand and a couple fingers and this is very comon and can be used with one hand easily as well.

I like those kind. Mostly one handers, longer blade, can use with two when needed.

''S'' shaped guard and onion pommel, great ! I would like to see a slightly larger flat section near the tip, it would look even meaner  Keep us informed !

Christ, I'm guess I'm lucky here. Both my hands together are about 7 inches.

Sweet! Now I'm really curious.
By S-shaped guard, I take it you mean something like the Guardian Warder or the Zardoz saber?
Oh, I realize that - I guess I was just lamenting the lack of 8" grips in general. I tend to want sword grips to fit either one or two hands really well. I don't really care for in-between grips.
Anyway, it's still easily among the swords I want the most right now, so it's not really a huge deal. If I do get one, I figure I'll either get used to it or have another customization project on my hands. (And I have yet to find a sword I don't want to alter in any way, so that's normal for me.)
Hm, you mean a yelman? That is, one of those raised false edges?
I'm the other way around, honestly. I've noticed the current warder has a slight bulge at the false edge. I think the first thing I would do would be to get rid of that, making the curve of the back uniform all the way to the tip.
