Well me and sum friends as crazy as it sounds are planning on going bear hunting with swords before we go into the marines, were aiming to get a black bear.
Most likely were gonna have 1 Claymore and the other are probably going to be single handed swords or smaller two handed swords, there will be roughly about 6 of us.
note: that were gonna keep the skin and cook the meat as well so were not planning on killing and leaving...
besides that i wanna get a idea how this might go down since i wanna hear from ppl with actual experience and more expertise in swords and how effective it might be going up against a bear...

I would say that a bunch of people attempting to hack a bear to death with swords is animal cruelty, but i have a feeling you folks are going to experience a little animal cruelty yourselves...

Never thought about hunting a bear with a sword. Don't quite know what advice to give..... though they are surprisingly quick. Good luck hunting and ditto for the Marines!

well hypothetically if we do decide to go through this, will the sword even really cut through the thick fur and muscle?...or will it be like poking a bodylifter with a toothpick?

Get it on camera. Whether I see it on YouTube as a successful hunt, or I see it on Rotten.com because of the 5 out of 6 of you that will get mauled and brutally killed, I just want to see it.

I think this is a really bad idea...........even if you have taken bear before with a firearm. You do not want to be close enough to a bear to strike it with a sword. It is faster and stronger and smarter than you can imagine and up to six guys trying to get a hit in with swords all in the same melee with a single bear..........well how many ways could that go wrong.
To tell you the truth, if I was in the woods with a gun and came upon that scene I don't know whether I'd shoot the bear or at the six cruel guys with swords hacking at the bear.
Even if there is no legal ramifications from the local wildlife management, I can only imagine the reaction from the tree huggers and the sword haters......ammo for their passions.
Just say no!

Hunting black bear should be done with a large caliber hunting rifle like fallschirmjager says. A Remington 700 in .30-06 can be had at Wal-mart for bargain basement prices. If you want to prove your mettle to your friends, I suggest hunting with a Smith & Wesson Model 500 - otherwise known as the Hand cannon. Also, black bears are not like Grizzly bears. They will most likely try to avoid a group of 6 guys trampling around in the woods - you're definitely not going to sneak up on any bear. Finally, any bear is going to be covered with dense fur and thick skin (though not as thick as a pachyderm). Essentially, a bear is going to be covered with natural chain mail armor. Yes, a sword probably could cut through it - if by some miracle you get that close - but you're going to be dealing mostly blunt force trauma to the bear. The only medieval weapon I would use is the same weapon that was actually used to hunt bears in medieval times - a bear spear. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_spearAs fallschirmjager explained, hunting a bear with a weapon not intended to be used as a hunting weapon disrespects the bear in the manner of it's (and probably your) death.

I made ajoke about video earlier and for this i apologize... i did not relize how serious you are about the subject.
that said, and all negative comments aside, i definitely agree with the Vietnam Vet above, you can forget joining marine corps whe you are disable and bedridden being transported to woud care on an ambulance twice a week.
also i would like to say that a vid on you tube, successful or not would be evidence in court for animal rights activists. also it would bring bad karma to true sword enthusiast... since stuff like this is what negative people need to provide ammo to legislate against sword ownership.
a weapon is a weapon... to be used responsibly. a true warrior, while able to take a life, considers life sacred and something not to be wasted. as for a chinese arts practitioner... a traditionalist of budhist or taoist nature... doesnt even believe in killing an animal for food. a life is a sacred thing.

If you wish to hunt a bear with a melee weapon, I would recommend spears, which are actually the time honored bear hunting weapons.
If you MUST go with swords, I'd go with the biggest / longest swords you can. Black bears are usually shy timid animals that typically flee rather than fight. I think most you encounter are simply going to high tail it and split, or climb a tree.

I thought this was a joke post, but just in case it's not, here's my 2 cents.
This is a bad idea.
You know how people say that when you train with a weapon that you should train with it until it feels like a natural extension of yourself? Well, fortunately for bears, their claws ARE natural extensions of themselves. They've been practicing their whole lives with these weapons.
But yes, go with spears. The sword was designed to combat other humans, not bears. When choosing a spear, go with one that has some wings on it so that after the head enters, the wings will keep the bear from just climbing up the spear to kill you. Also, you need to give your ballsiest member the mace. It's my belief that if hunting is to be done, that it should impart as little pain to the animal as possible. After the bear is incapacitated with the spears, bring in the mace.
In the event that this is a joke post:
This is one of the few times that I'd suggest going with a Del Tin. They usually make thicker blades, which might serve to keep the blade from becoming useless half way through the melee. Maybe not Del Tin's specifically, but go with the thicker, heavier sword manufacturers. But you also need some quick weapons as well, so I'd go half and half.
But the only reason I could see anyone doing this is to prove how manly they are. Well, why cheapen the moment with swords? Go ahead and rent a plane, crash it in some mountain range 100's of miles from anywhere, and go bear hunting AFTER the crash with all injuries sustained with nothing but the wreckage from the plane and things you find in the forest.

well if you use a spear i would recommend something similar to CS boar spear.
as for hand and a half sword... greg, i think the idea is to keep two handed...LOL. altho hand and a half wouldnt be too bad of an injury considering.. just sayin.

You could always shoot the bear first, preferably with a large caliber rifle (.700 mag was great suggestion ), then after the bear dies, hack and chop at it with your swords to see how much damage you could have done with your swords or go in on a cow carcass, or half a cow, a pig, or a side of beef like they do at Cold Steel I don't give a flip about the bear, less of them around the better, I say, but I wouldn't want to see you get hurt, or set upon by the likes of some animal rights nuts when you post your video Nobody can say anything if you are just hacking away on dead meat

Sounds like your looking for a "Rite of Passage" experience. I say, forget the bear hunt. kronus has the right idea. You damn well better physically/mentally prepare yourself for boot camp. Your gonna experience the "Rite of Passage" of your life when you disembark that bus on Parris Island. ;D Good luck in boot.
