...but how many SBG members have actually given one or more of your swords a name? I, myself, have named two of my four swords: 1) "Hassan", an antique (early 19th cy.) tulwar with a very wide and heavy blade (as in, "Hassan CHOP!!!" ;D) - I'm holding Hassan in my avatar pic, BTW. 2) "Talon", my new wakizashi. I've always felt favorite weapons deserve a name...

I've named at least 4 of mine, but I'm not telling.

Huh. I've owned dozens of swords in the past and now have narrowed them down to a select few, but I've never named any of them. I don't know why. Seems like something I'd do.
Though I've never named a car or any of my other possessions either, but swords mean an awful lot to me.
I have a friend who names every important object in her life, cars, computers, breasts, cell phones, shoes, keys... It's very odd walking into a conversation with her in medias res because I'll have no clue who she's talking about for several minutes until I realize it's often not a person.

Naming swords is a tradition which goes back as long as there have been swords. I have named all of mine, even if they merely passed though my hands and I did not have them very long.
On a silly note - I had a matching Windlass sword and dagger set back in 2003. I called the sword, "Maynard" and the dagger, "Zed" after the pawn shop guys in Pulp Fiction.

Nothing wrong with naming your swords as Odingaard points out there is quite a long standing tradition to do so. Me personally I have never named any of my swords or knives. Though it is possible with my newest one that I might after I customize it completely. I think at that point I will have a much higher personal connection with it, than just a regular blade that was purchased and part of my collection.

...I've named the family van "Bonnie-chan". Usually when I start 'er up, I say, "Iku ze, Bonnie-chan!"

Well, to me, I feel like my swords have to earn their names. Unfortunatley, only one of my swords has done that, and has earned two names at that. Can't decide between "Rabbit's Bane" or "Razor" for my VA303s. Rabbit's Bane came from when I had to mercy kill that baby rabbit a few months back. And Razor, because, well, that's how it cuts. But both seemed to generic of a name, so I'm not accepting either of them. I suppose I just hold my swords to a higher standard when it comes to naming.
Although, I might name my 304s some variation on "First Son"
I fall into the same category as Luna in that it seems like something that I would do, but haven't done yet.

My first custom bowie was named "Annie Breen." My Windlass Landsknecht was "Dagmar." My stainless steel wallhanger katana from United was "Slug Slicer" after my wife tried to flick a slug from the front porch and bisected it instead. My Hanwei Bastard Sword even has a little poem that goes with the name: Of self and life bereft, For in enmity you've met the Death of Dreams.

Never named a real sword, but I had an SCA basket-hilt rattan one christened " Cods-walloper" after I groin-shotted myself trying out a new combination on the pell Always wore a box at the pell after that.... My wife has an antique treadle sewing machine named Gertrude that she still uses. According to the serial number, Gertrude turned 100 years old in June this year. Cheers Marc E

I haven’t named any of my swords, something about naming production swords seems silly. Knowing that there are hundreds of identical swords out there kind of puts me off. now if I had a unique custom sword then I would be tempted.
The only inanimate object that I have named was an ancient Ford truck, I used to own, which was called “Peppy the Mule"

I've only ever named one of my swords, and that because I put so much time into her, and the fact that it didn't have a name as a new product. What it was, it became not, so she needed a name. (Yeah it a "she"). Scarlet. P.S. I also call my courier van "Old Girl" By null at 2010-06-25 Shot at 2010-08-13

+1 for starting this thread in much the same manner I was thinking of!
I have named vehicles and weapons in the past, even if I'm the only one who knows the object has been named.
I think that it's a pretty common thing in humans. We are tool users to the core, and that bond between man and machine (and what is a sword but a cutting machine powered by you?) is a special thing that we take for granted all the time. Man's ability to 'feel' through a tool or machine is unique in the animal kingdom.
Think of a carpenter or blacksmith knowing exactly where the hammer will fall without looking. A racecing driver being able to put the outside tire in a precise location at 180 MPH, in the rain, at night. And, yes, a swordsman moving in concert with a well-designed sword in is hand.
Production or not, it's more about your bond with the object than the object itself, although I'll agree that customization can intensify that bond.
My KC Yagyu is "Tatakai no Inori" or "Battle Prayer" My favorite handgun (Heckler and Koch P2000) is "Otto" My modified car is "The Shukenja" (Mazdaspeed6)
Like the saying goes..."This is my ______. There are many like it, but this one is MINE"

Cars and guns I've named, but I haven't started naming swords yet. Currently I drive Mathilda... Ria, Velia, and Kiyoko sit in my gun safe while Jess and Ursula pull guard duty.
