That's fine if you don't think that I can turn a machete into a sword, it's not gonna stop me from doing it.

anyone know the hardness for sure? and what are the chances of the tang being hardened to the same degree as the blade- that would make for some interesting options when reworking this machete.

Well, from watching a video of Cold Steel's production line, the whole piece undergoes the same heat changes. So unless they've used two different types of metal (which I doubt) then the tang is the same hardness as the blade.
Lemme look and see if I can find the vid.
Ah hah! Ok, it's a good vid to watch, but if you only want to get one thing from it, skip to the 55sec mark, you'll see (what I believe is) a rockwell machine. The particular machete in the vid has a hardness of either 47 or 48.
So granted it's still "under 50" but these are short blades, not long. They aren't held to the same standards as normal swords. But that doesn't mean that they wouldn't make a good "Tactical shortsword" ... for 30 bucks plus some elbow grease.

I plan doing to same thing when I finally get a CS katana machete. I want two, one to cut the hand down to 13 inch the other one to 7inches. If you expect a machete to come with a real sharp edge ever get a Ontario they come very dull. But they are one of the very best machetes. Yes the way CS sharpened thier machete cause the edge you talk about they run one side through a power grinder then the other side, not really a rolled edge though.

I guess for 30$ you can make a decent sword like weapon out of it that can be used as a tactical sword. For people with low budget and some time this might be the way to go. It seems we have a different opinion of what makes a sword. That's fine, if a metal slab in the form of a blade that does it's job cutting things equals a sword to you, then have fun and make sure to post the results of your customization. For me, a sword is more, it's not just a farm tool.
